Boston U. MAG
Boston, MA:
We got up early and started the two-hour trip to Boston. My mother drove me and my friend Rachel to the campus where we would be attending their open house.
Finally (after finding a parking space), we reported to one of the buildings where we were given a folder of papers and directed to an auditorium for a short introductory speech. We were given the schedules and locations of the different seminars being offered that day. While we were attempting to locate the seminars, we were able to see the campus. We trudged down the sidewalk in the rain, we "refreshed" our lungs with the various smells of the city. Automobile exhaust, factory smoke and the smells from a near-by McDonald's filled the air. Cement stretched as far as the eye could see, broken only by an occasional tree protruding from a square cut out of this "beautiful" veneer! There was also a statue or two that broke the monotony.
Boston University seemed cold and uninviting to me. We attended part of a physical therapy seminar. The information was entirely on requirements needed for post-graduate studies. I heard no mention of what they were looking for from a high school student! We also waited in line for hours to talk one-on-one with a woman about physical therapy, but we finally got so discouraged we left.
However, I do remember two positive things about Boston University. First, two students from the marketing program gave us a mini-tour. They told us the legend behind the bird sculpture and how it honored Martin Luther King, Jr. Also, there was an a cappella group singing in one of the lobbies that was excellent!
We all breathed a sigh of relief as we headed home over the bridge, leaving Boston behind. I am just thankful that I didn't have my heart set on attending Boston University. However, I do not regret attending the open house. I now feel that I have a clearer idea that I'm not looking for a college with an urban campus but if you are, take a look. f
