The Stuck Squirrel
Humans can’t see a lot of the animal kingdom.. The most immediate example is squirrels. Right under human noses, always running around. The squirrels have a secret they don’t want people to know. They can speak fluently and clearly. Until one day when a man named Jimmy McGuil was walking down the street and passed a tree with a million squirrels in it. He turned around and stood looking at what looked to be more squirrel than tree. After a few minutes of waiting and watching, a loud squirrel spoke to his fellow squirrels,
“Why is that human looking at us? What is he doing?” Jimmy was dumbfounded at hearing the animal talk. Curious he tried to talk back to the squirrels but to no success. Tongue-tied he just walked away for the day.
The next day while walking down the same street Jimmy noticed the tree that was packed yesterday was empty, except for one squirrel who seemed to watch him the whole time he approached the tree. As Jimmy got closer he noticed the squirrel checking out a hole in the tree. Once Jimmy got close enough he asked the squirrel,
“What are you doing?” The squirrel paid Jimmy no mind until he repeated his question three more times. Then the squirrel finally took his gaze off the hole and stared at Jimmy for a while. After a few moments of checking Jimmy out the squirrel finally piped up and said,
“I’m trying to fill this tree's hole with nuts so I can have plenty of them for the winter.” Jimmy was again amazed that the squirrel could speak perfect English and that he could understand it. So Jimmy stood there and talked with the squirrel about it filling up the tree with nuts and that is when Jimmy found out why so many squirrels were swarming the tree the day before. The squirrels were all family and they all wanted to stock up nuts in the same place.
Jimmy was curious why this one squirrel was still here while its family was all away so he asked the squirrel.
“I’m trying to fill the whole tree up all the way to the top so we never run out of food,” the squirrel said proudly, “But no matter how hard I try and how many nuts I stuff in this hole I can’t seem to fill the tree, I feel like I’m going nuts!”
Jimmy went on with his day and left the squirrel to fill the tree up with nuts. The next day Jimmy walked by again and saw two squirrels sitting exactly where the one was the day prior. Again Jimmy tried to engage the squirrels in conversation. This time he talked to both the squirrels and found that they still couldn’t fill the tree. While they were all talking a third squirrel ran up and joined them.
The new squirrel was just as curious as Jimmy had been so the first squirrel caught the third squirrel up to speed. The new squirrel had an idea. It ran into the hole and looked down the tree. It couldn’t see much because it was so dark but the more it looked it could see a bright light all the way at the bottom slightly covered up. The three squirrels got down from the tree and ran to the bottom to see what was going on. The squirrel noticed the tree had a second hole at the bottom where all the nuts were spilling out. On the ground was a massive pile of nuts. It was like a sea of brown contrasted with the green grass around the tree.
So Jimmy and the three squirrels worked a whole day to move the pile of nuts from the original tree to another one. This new tree had been fully scouted by everyone and it seemed the hole would be perfect for the nuts to sit all winter. But after the squirrels were done and all the nuts were moved, Jimmy noticed the original squirrel he had talked to seemed sad. To help it out Jimmy asked what was wrong since they had just done exactly what the squirrel had wanted all along.
The squirrel replied, “Now that the nuts are actually in the tree I don’t have a hobby anymore.”
