One Man's Trash Is Another Donkey's Treasure

The year was 1991, the Arizona sun beating down on a backyard birthday party. Unbeknownst to the adults and children of the party, there lurks a lifeform which has had its kind abused since the 14th century. That lifeform is known to many, as the humble piñata. This is a tale that would teach a young piñata that sometimes, the best things in life die, even after you’ve worked so hard for it, but you just need to accept it and move on.

“Six adults, nine children, and only one ticket out of here, the gutters!” thought Medaj, a newly bought piñata who knew what was going to happen here.
“Bugara said this was going to happen, but I wasn’t prepared enough. I should’ve listened!”.  As his eyes glanced around the yard one final time, he noticed something that wasn’t in his line of sight before. He saw a break in the fence, a clean opening of which he could run through. Previously it was blocked by a cake, but since the adults took it to the table, it was as clear as day. So, while everyone was preoccupied with the cake, Madej escaped. He squeezed out of the side of the fence and made his way down a perilous cliffside. As joy lit his face, he hastily made his way to the nearest bus stop. Medaj pays with the money he pickpocketed from one of the adults and made his way to the nearby state of California.

The year was 1999, in a secluded section of the Six Rivers forest, Medaj was having his daughter’s first birthday. The bright blue sky and earthly atmosphere of the woods gave off an almost hypnotizing feeling with its various bird calls and insect noises. Medaj, his wife, Eliza, his daughter Tracy, and a couple other piñatas were there, celebrating. Since his escape, Medaj had rescued several other piñatas, one of which turned out to be his future wife.
“Happy birthday dear Tracy, happy birthday to you!” chimed the chorus of piñatas. Suddenly, in the distance, gunshots were heard. The group collectively turned around.
    “What was that!”
“Get down, no time to explain, just get to cover!” ordered Medaj. A band of hunters barreled into the property and opened fire to the crowd.
“GET ON THE GROUND, YOU HAVE THE RIGHT TO REMAIN SILENT” bellowed the hunter.
“Please, it's me you want, just take me!”
“No! You’ve gone off too easy!” All of the sudden, Medaj’s vision cut to black.

When he awoke, Madej was tied down in a chair with his family strapped to medieval torture devices.
“We are giving you a choice. You can tell us whatever information you know about operation White Noise, or let your family die. Simple” commanded the secretive agent.
“What? Please just let my family go, I swear I don’t know anything about that! Please just give me my family” Madej was in tears at this point. The agents would not let up.
“Sir, the question”
“PLEASE!”
“Truly unfortunate it had to come to this, really, you could’ve been such a valuable asset”. And with a swift flick of a switch, Medaj’s family was torn to shreds in a paper shredder.
“Alright, dispose of this junk.” The agent commanded two muscular brutes came out of the shadow and brutally bashed Madej with a baseball bat. They then proceeded to throw him outside, but little did they know, he was still alive. In a struggling attempt at survival, Medaj crawled away, never to be seen by the agents again.

The year is 2018. Medaj is sitting at a local piñata bar with his head down. He’s been here for the past few hours.
“Hey, getta hold of ya’self Medaj. Ya practically fallin’ apart here!
“I don’t know, what’s there to live for?”
“Listen, I know ya had a rough life, but ya have to see it this way, when life gives ya lemons, make lemonade!”
“That means nothing to me”.
“Look, I’ll cut the crap, you’ve had shit luck and you need help, but you can’t just keep going around like this, it's actually pathetic. You were a smart dude, you could do anything, but you let yourself die with them-”
“Look I get it, but you don’t know the pain I feel every day when I have to wake up and see that picture of my family, smiling and joyful. It kills me.” Medaj leaves the bar to retreat home for the night. As he reaches his apartment complex, he skips his room to venture to the top floor. He sits on the edge of the roof with the picture of his family that he always keeps tucked away in his wallet. Suddenly, a hand rests on Medaj’s shoulder.
“Son, there’s a time and place for everything thing, as well as a reason.” Medaj could recognize that voice anywhere. He turned, open-eyed and asked, “Bugara?”. It was as he thought. Bugara sits down next to Medaj.
“You probably have a lot of questions, but I can only tell you one thing. Sometimes, the best things in life die, even after you’ve worked so hard for them, but you just need to accept it and move on”. Medaj, in tears, embraces Bugara and sobs into the cold Pennsylvanian night.
