The Church

It was a cool November afternoon, the church bells chiming in the wind. The sun was just poking through the clouds leaving a ray of heavenly light basking the old nun house on the hill. But as I looked out the window something looked off about everything. It was too perfect, Almost distorted. Like i was looking into a mirror, it didn't look like it fit into the surrounding area.

When I went into school the next day I tried talking to my friend Carter about it “ Hey did you notice how strange the nun house looked yesterday.” I said

“Troy, what are you talking about? That nun house has been abandoned for decades. Why would it look any different than it did the day before!” he said, trying not to laugh.

“ Carter, it just looked weird yesterday. ” I said.

“ If your so sure then why don’t we go to it after class today” he said, mocking me.

“ Alright, are you sure you won’t chicken out?” I said.

He shrugged my question off and continued his way down the hall towards his next class. Whenever school let out I had completely forgotten about the conversation with Carter. That was until he came barreling down the hallway towards me asking “ are you ready to go or did you chicken out.”  I gave an awkward laugh and said “ of course not!” I Professed my voice shaking a little.

We started towards the house its presence was growing on us the closer we got the afternoon was cloudy , with the occasional rustling of leaves in the wind that was oddly strong for a little valley town. But soon when Carter and I were about 200 yards away from the entryway of the house, a thick fog enveloped us.

We gave each other a look and kept moving towards the house. When it finally came into our vision we say just how trashed the house really was. The doorframe was splintered windows broken but the strangest part was that the crosses were all cleany cut in half. Almost like someone came here and purposely broke the building. As we walked down the hallway the light from the doorway slowly faded into nothingness.

At the end of the hallway sat a little altar with a deer skull on it. The skull was a bright polished white color. “I don’t like this----” before I could finish my sentence a nearby bookshelf fell over with a thundering boom,  a cloud of dust soon engulfed the hallway. As Carter and I stumbled into a room on the left coughing. “What the heck just happened?” he asked between coughs.

“I have no idea.” I replied, catching my breath. As we looked around the room trying to gain a sense of where we were, we noticed the walls were covered in crude drawings of the church and the nearby park. While I was looking at the drawings Carter let out a loud shriek that made me turn around to look at him. When i saw him he looked like a mannequin at the mall, he had a funny look on his face. His eyes were wide and his jaw was locked open, “I swear i saw something move behind that closet.”

I went to go look to see what it was when a frog hopped out from the shadow behind the closet. I burst out laughing as Carter tried to play it off that he knew it was a frog the whole time. When I finally regained my composure I said “ we really should get going as it’s pretty late right now” . I showed him my watch telling that the time was 9:30 at night. He nodded his head and we started to leave when there was a loud crash in one of the other rooms. We gave each other a look and walked into the room to investigate.

“I don’t like this, I think we should leave.” Carter says to me while glancing around the room.

“You’re the one who wanted to come here and now you want to leave.” I muttered under my breath.  Looking around the room there was nothing wrong with the room. However it had this ghastly chill to it. I looked at Carter and when I did I could see a figure in the corner of the room for a split second before it moved into a dark shadow at the end of the room. It was enough to get me to agree with Carter to leave the building.

“Alright I agree with you, I think we should leave now.” i said

“ Finally you got some sense in you.” He replied

We left the room and started making our way to the exit. We walked for what felt like hours before the door came into sight. The warm evening light was leaking through the door frame. When we were about 25 feet from the exit a loud ear piercing  screech echoed throughout the hallway. This was quickly followed by rapid footsteps rushing towards us. We started sprinting towards the exit however the more we ran the farther it got and the closer the footsteps got.

Just then Carter let out a scream of pure terror and as i turned around I could see him be swiftly pulled into the darkness. I tried to reach out to him but he was nowhere to be seen. I could hear the sound of police sirens outside the building. I ran out of the door to see a couple cop cars sitting outside along with Carter and my parents. When they saw me they ran over to me and gave me a hug before asking where I was. I told them I was inside with Carter. This got a visible reaction out of his parents along with a “where is he then?”

All I could stammer was a weak “ I don’t know.”  I could see the distraught look on their faces. The rest of the time I spent at the house was a blur of flashing blue and red light, crying and radio chatter.

The doctor just sat there tapping his pencil on his clipboard as if doubting my story. Then he wrote something down and thanked me for telling him my story and walked out of the room, leaving me in the bright white room by myself. Then it whispered in my ear “ Good, I’ll be watching you.”
