There is nothing left. I have nothing. My family has been killed in World War Three. I am inside the floor of our home, under a removable piece of wood that is hidden. I begin to emerge slowly as I smell the fire spreading closer towards me. Everything is scattered and covered in dust. The floor is torn and textured with broken glass and bullet shells. It is so strange to see my home in this state as my mother kept everything so clean and neat. I take a step and discover a photo of my family. I pick it up as tears begin to rinse the dirt off my face. I bring the picture to my heart and sob as I remember my family; My mom, so strong and caring, my dad, hardworking and sturdy, my sister, talented and sweet, my brother, protective and loving. And they were all taken from me. I fold the picture and put it into my pocket. As I do so, there is a loud yet distant boom that makes me jump. I have a sour feeling in my stomach, and decide to leave the house. I see so many people, dead, bleeding, injured, bruised. I don’t know how to handle this so I run. I have no faith that God is real anymore. I get to a forest and sit on a fallen tree next to a gentle stream. I pick up a rock and study it. It is smooth and soft with beautiful layers in different shades of gray. Anger and pain burns inside of me as I chuck it as far as I can. I notice the bright sun peeking through the trees and the fresh dew on the leaves. As I examine the trees, I see a rosebud beginning to bloom. I relax slightly and enjoy the vibrant green of nature. I take the picture out and stare at it for what seems like forever. Memories of my mom shoving me into the hole under the house show up in my mind. Her expression is what scared me the most, the fear in her eyes just haunts me. As a single tear falls from my eye, I feel a hand gently rest on my shoulder. I turn and recognize my mother’s beautiful blue eyes and warm smile even though she’s covered in dirt and grime. I hug her with all of the might I have left inside of me. “I love you”, she utters. I cannot speak. We hug each other tighter as tears of relief begin to fall down both of our faces.
