Have you ever seen someone across the way that just… stands out? Someone who stands out but you can’t tell why. I spend my time finding these people. I always wanted to know why they stood out to me. There was one girl in particular who stood out to me. She walked into the classroom and immediately I noticed that she had that same air, that kind that stands out; now, I’m not saying it’s a romantic thing, I’m already happily taken, but she just seemed to be a person who you wanted to know more about. She has a kind of aura, the kind that makes you want to smile. As I got to know her I recognized what made her stand out. She was real. Her smile was real, her comments were real, her care was real. How does one reach that point? How could I become real like them? I’m glad I got to know her as she has helped me see the power of being real. Her smile is truly what caught my attention, it was bright and true. What kind of pain did one have to feel to smile that true? How did a person experience such suffering and still smile like that?

What is the story of the girl across the room?

The author's comments:

I wrote this piece as a part of my series "The Strangers We Know" which talks about the strangers around us. My intention with the series of works is to get the readers to pay attention to the strangers around us as they all have a story to tell as long as we know the right questions to ask. Hope you enjoy the piece.
