The Final Nine
Daryl Duck was a name that every golf fan knew years ago before the incident. Daryl was a 3-time PGA championship winner and a perennial contender at Augusta. While he was not the most likeable golfer, no one could deny that he was one of the most skilled golfers in the world. Many knew Daryl for his extreme passion for the sport whether it was good or bad. Daryl held himself to a very high standard which did not pair well with his dreadfully short temper. He was fined and suspended many times throughout his career but, The PGA never fully banned him because of how skilled he was, until he pushed the limit.
Ten years after, Daryl lives alone in his multi-million-dollar mansion on the side of Sandy Shores Golf Course in Texas where he still golfs every day for his own enjoyment. Over the years Daryl has solely worked on his anger management and believes he has overcome it, although he has not played in a competitive game in 10 years. Daryl’s skill has remained just as astonishing if not better. Many people missed him in the PGA because of the entertainment he brought, but some were glad he was gone. Daryl enjoyed playing for enjoyment, but he missed the feeling of competing, and he believes the PGA has missed his contribution to the league.
Over the last few years there has been a lot of panic in the PGA because of the rapidly decreasing viewership. Jay Monahan, the commissioner of the PGA has been pressured to come up with an idea to gain some viewership back. The one thought that keeps going through his mind is the insane popularity the sport had when Daryl Duck was competing. Jay came up with an idea, although it was going to be a very risky move.
The next week Daryl received a message personally inviting him to the next PGA tournament at East Lake Golf Course in Atlanta, happening in one week. Without hesitation Daryl accepted and started preparing for the tournament. He grabbed his clubs and packed his bags and made sure to bring everything he needed. The whole week was a blur. All he could think of was the tournament.
The day finally came and Daryl was doing all he could to calm himself down to avoid any mistakes again. Today was his one chance to prove that he had changed. All day Daryl hit balls in the range and took deep breaths, making sure to stay calm. His golf game was as good as it ever has been and there should be no reason to get upset if he could play how he practiced.
The tournament started and it was packed. Every seat had been sold out, a record-breaking number of viewers tuned in to watch, and the pressure was high. Daryl started out with two eagles back-to-back and the crowd was loving it. He remained calm and collected the entire first nine with no reason to even be slightly annoyed. He was an insane 11 under through the first nine. The next nine started off just as well, but it slowly took a turn. Many people in the stands began teasing him. They would mention his ban or his swing, and it began to get to him.
Every shot began to get worse and worse and Daryl began to get visibly upset. He would bang his club on the ground or swear out loud. Many spectators got concerned and the viewership got even higher. He attempted to calm down, but nothing worked. He bogeyed the next three holes which was completely unlike Daryl. Still some people began saying hurtful things while he walked to his next shot.
Daryl reached the final hole, and his monstrous lead had dwindled down to just one stroke. He was very worked up and he tried to focus as hard as possible. He took deep breaths and closed his eyes. He needed to have a good shot to get onto the green. He stared at the ball as everyone waited in anticipation. All he needed to do was get over the pond without hitting one of the trees and he would be on the green. He loaded up his swing and hit the ball. The ball looked promising until it barely clipped a tree branch and dropped down onto the ground, rolling slowly back into the pond.
Daryl broke down once again as some began to laugh. He grabbed his club, as he did exactly ten years ago, spun, and let go of his club in the direction of the crowd.
