The Taking of Telc
From a small town called Telc in southern Europe comes two adventurous teenagers, Sandra and Mary. During a sleepover at Sandra’s house after a weekend of river rafting and paragliding, Mary and Sandra lay silently in bed staring at the ceiling with bodies sore from a weekend of vigorous exercise.
“Hey Sandra…” said Mary in a curious voice.
“…..What Mary?” Sandra replied with a short pause from being awaken.
“I’ve been thinking, we always do things together, we never really involve anyone else in our adventures. Why not next weekend we go on a camping trip with our friends? That way we can catch up with what they been up too. I mean it has been 3 years since we last saw them.” Mary says.
“Yeah, that would be great idea huh? How about we give them a call tomorrow morning and see if they want to?” Sandra said.
With smiles on their faces each say goodnight and slowly drift themselves in to a deep sleep.
Early the next morning Sandra is last to wake up. Rolling to her side expecting to still see Mary asleep, her side of the bed is empty. In confusion and not thinking much of it, Sandra gets up and brushes her teeth. She headed over to the bed next preparing to fix it. Suddenly, she hears loud laughter coming from downstairs. Quickly she finishes the bed and creeps down the stairs careful not to make the stairs creek. Sandra slowly eases her way to the kitchen. She peeks her head around the corner of the kitchen wall and sees Mary on the phone. Sandra eavesdrops on the conversation.
“So your free for the weekend?! Great! Its going to be soooo much fun! See you in a couple days. Bye!” Mary says hanging up the phone.
“Who the hell are you talking to this early in the morning!?” Sandra says startling Mary.
“Wooh!” Mary screams. “You scared the hell outta me! I was just making some calls to friends that might be interested in coming with us this weekend.” Mary said.
“Its 6 o’clock in the morning, I’m surprised anyone even answered the phone. Anyway, any luck?” Sandra said.
“Yeah, I got a few. Lucy from the gym, Mark the orchestra wiz, and Joey.” Mary replied
“Joey? The douchbag from high school that cared about nothing but himself?” Sandra questioned.
“Yeah he was the last number that I called and actually picked up, sorry” Mary said.
“And, I understand Lucy, we really got along with her, but why Mark? He’s random, more random than Joey” Sandra said.
“Well he never really had a lot of friends and I thought it would be a good idea for him to tag along.” Mary said with a sorry look on her face. “Oh, and the plan was for all of them to meet here on Saturday, is that ok?”
“Whatever.” Sandra said shaking her head as she went back to the kitchen to look what to make for breakfast.
The weekend came by faster than anyone expected. Their friends cars all parked in front of Sandra’s house with bags all packed on every car roof. Inside, the five of them quickly get acquainted once again with one another. They finish up their last cups of tea and few bites of cookies and begin to pack Sandra’s parents Range Rover that she is borrowing for the trip. With the trunk all packed up and bags on the roof tied down, they drive off toward the thick forested mountain’s.
Reaching the end of the dirt road the five of the friends decide its time to walk. Each one of the friends greatly equipped for battling any circumstance in the wilderness venture off deeper in the forest with bags on back. Sandra leading the way she maneuvers between trees and up then down hills like she lived in the forest her whole life.
After a good four hours of walking they come to a huge rock with a beautiful water fall that fell into a small pond.
“Is this good?” Sandra asks the group.
“Looks good to me. We got fresh water, some fish in the pond for food, and more than enough trees for firewood. I think it’s perfect.” Joey said.
“I agree with Joey, this is a much better place to spend the trip than what I expected. Its not as dirty.” Said Lucy.
“Whelp, it settled, we camp her for the weekend.” Sandra said in command.
They each begin to unpack their own bags. One by one they set up their tents.
“Its getting pretty dark.” Says Joey in a whisper to himself. “Hey orchestra boy, why don’t you come with me and get some wood for the night?” Joey yells.
“What a polite way to ask me.” Mark says in sarcasm.
The two of them go out to look for some wood while the ladies set up a station for cooking. While Sandra and Lucy are busy setting up the kitchen, Mary tries her luck at getting some fish. It takes a while but Mary gets some catches. She ends up with five fresh water fish, enough for each one of them each.
With the suns light barely peeking over the horizon, Mark and Joey come back with arms full of firewood. Both looked exhausted with dirt on their faces and sweat drenched on their shirts.
“What happened to you guys?” said Lucy giggling.
“What happened was we forgot to bring a axe to cut any wood!” Joey screams.
“So how did you get the wood then?” Mary asked.
“Yow-Ming here hung on the branches until they broke off the trees.” Joey said pointing at Mark.
“Yeah, and all Joey did was cheer me on.” Mark said shaking his head.
The sun eventually hid behind the mountains and the moon began to takes its spot. Stars covered the sky and the sounds of crickets filled the ears of the campers. Smoke from the firewood and smell from cooked fish floated into the night sky.
Stomachs all full of fish, one by one they slowly began to fall asleep. Sandra was last to fall asleep as she was amazed at the star covered sky. Eye lids getting heavier and heavier she goes to sleep.
Suddenly, Sandra was awaken by these unusual roaring sounds. Sandra thought to herself of what could be making these noises in the forest and this late at night, but couldn’t figure it out. She looks around at the others, but none of them were startled as they were all still fast asleep. The noise began to get louder and louder until something caught Sandra’s eye in the sky. The sky that was once full of bright stars, is now full of dozens of planes and fighter jets. Sandra watched as they flew over the forest trees. After three full minutes they all passed over. Sandra still shaken at what she just saw tries to fall back asleep.
The next morning they group in surrounding the camp fire. Sandra is last to wake up again and before anyone could wish her a good morning she says:
“Did anyone hear anything unusual last night?”
“Yeah I did, I heard a loud roaring of something. Almost like engines, I thought I was dreaming.” Said Joey
“Me too, I saw dozens and dozens of planes fly over us. It was very unusual.” Lucy said with worry in her face.
“C’mon guys, its not like it’s a World War III going on.” Mark said jokingly.
“I think we should head home early.” Sandra suggested.
“ I agree with Sandra.” Said Lucy
“Me too.” Said Mary.
“Fine lets go.” Mark said in frustration.
They all packed up fast and silent with thoughts running through their heads. With bags back on their backs they make their way back to the Range Rover. They set everything back on the Jeep and drive back to Telc.
The drive made the day go by fast and night began to come again. Just as they pass the sign that says “Welcome to Telc” they notice something different about the town. They all begin to get this vibe that something wasn’t right. The streets were vacant and cars abandoned on the streets in traffic as though time had froze. Some cars were on fire and some were in pieces.
“What the hell happened?” Joey asks.
“I don’t know” Sandra says with eyes stretched open.
“Its like something chased everyone out of Telc.” Said Mary.
Where the town fair was held they notice smoke coming from it. They drive closer to it, only to be stopped by barbed fences that were laid on the streets. They all look at each other as the car rolls to a stop.
“You guys should go see what’s going on.” Mary said
“You guys as in all of us right?” Joey says.
“No, you guys as in you and Mark.” Mary replies.
Mark and Joey decided to go ahead and investigate what was making the smoke leaving the girls in the Jeep.
As Mark and Joey get to the entrance of the fair, they see hundreds of people in the middle of the field guarded by fully armored troopers with guns in hand. Mark and Joey couldn’t believe what they were seeing. The town’s people were being held as hostages.
While they were observing they people, a trooper spots them and yells out:
“Hey!”
The trooper quickly sounds the alarm and points the spot light at them. Mark and Joey sprint back to the Jeep as fast as the can. When the get to the Jeep Joey screams at the top of his lungs:
“Drive!”
Sandra put the Jeep in drive and speeds down the street. Behind them the troopers and their reinforcements chase toward them not to far behind. Mark spots a spare gallon of gas in the backseat and picks it up. With the matches he used to make the campfire he comes up with an idea.
“What are you doing?” Lucy asks Mark.
“Watch.” Mark says.
He soaks a t-shirt in the gasoline and puts half of the shirt inside the jug of gas and half hanging out. He lights the outer half of the shirt and throws the gasoline tank out the window. Just as the troopers drive over the gas jug, a huge explosion occurs. The troopers stop following the group and tend to the fallen troops.
“Wow! It worked! I knew chemistry would come in handy some day!” Mark says in joy.
“Well they know we are out here and they will be coming for us sooner or later.” Joey says. “I think we should just go back to Sandra’s and think of a plan.”
“Plan for what? To leave I hope.” Lucy says.
“No! To help the people of Telc. We cant just run like cowards and not do anything for them.” Joey said.
“Joeys right. If you guys saw what we saw, would want to help too. Its horrible. People being caged and treated like animals” Mark said in disgust.
They arrive back at Sandra’s. Over a candle lit light they group together a plan.
“There is Dicks Guns and Ammo right across the street, that’s our best and safest way to get some weapons. Mary and I will go get some and you guys stay her and make sure this plan is well thought out.” Sandra said.
Sandra and Mary drop off Lucy, Mark, and Joey and drive back to the street to Dicks Guns and Ammo.
About twenty minutes since Sandra and Mary have been gone, Joey begins to hear the sound of propellers from a helicopter. He looks out the window and sees it. The group knew why it was coming. In the knick of time Sandra and Mary burst through the door with bags full of weapons.
“Where’s it coming from?” Mary asks.
“Right there.” Joey points out the back window.
A bright white light shines on the house and fills the inside as well. They all try their best to keep in the shadows.
Then just as they thought the helicopter is about to leave. A loud bang comes from inside the house. Joey shoots a round at the helicopter taking out its lights.
“What are you doing!?” Sandra yells. “It was about to leave!”
“I thought I could take it down.” Joey says in embarrassed failure.
The helicopter flies toward the house and hovers over the home. It shoots out bright red flares and takes off.
“Its marking us.” Mark says.
“For what?” Lucy asks.
“I don’t know. But they wouldn’t just do that then leave unless…” Mark pauses. “Get out the house!” He yelled out. “Get to the neighbors house!”
Without question they do what he says. Then they begin to hear another sound of an engine. This time this one was louder and coming closer faster. From a distance Joey recognizes it.
“A jet?” He says. “Oh S***!” he says realizing what was about to happen.
They all sprint out the house and make toward the neighbors home. The group, not even off of Sandra’s property yet sees the jet opens its belly and notices it dropping four dead bombs. It hits Sandra’s house shredding the home in pieces. Its blast impacts the whole group sending them flying forward across the yard. They group gets up and looks back at what is now a crater fire pit.
“Well now we know what they are capable of.” Mark says.
“What are we going to do.” Asks Lucy
“Well we all grew up in this town, I think we should fight for what’s ours.” Said Sandra.
“Are you crazy? There’s five of us and hundreds of them!” Joey said.
“I’m not telling you to join me, I’m doing what I think is right.” Sandra says. “Think about it, we’re dead either way. No one is going to help us. If the army was don’t you think they would be here already? The only hope I see that our town has lies in our hands. Do what you guys want, I’m going to help them.”
“She’s right, the only hope is us.” Mary says.
“I agree, I’m in.” Lucy says
“Me too.” Mark said
“Me Three.” Said Joey. “If they want war, then Damn it we’ll give them war!”
