ignite the fire
She woke up in a cold sweat, terrified by her reoccurring dream, was it a sign? Impossible, maybe it was just because she’s been eating those really sugary cookies mom keeps behind the apples in the pantry, and those were giving her crazy nightmares. She waved it away and tried to back to sleep, but to no avail. She got up from her bed and walked into the living room and turned on the T.V, as I flickered to life she turned it to her favorite channel, the sci- fic network, she has been criticized as a nerd her whole life, she wore glasses, had her face in a book almost 24/7, loved sci-fic and is in advanced placement in all of her classes. (Except P.E.) She sat perplexed at the screen as she saw an Americas next top model commercial come on. Why couldn’t she look like those girls, with the perfect bodies, and perfect hair, with gorgeous eyes and beautiful makeup? Why do girls have to be labeled like that? And there sat the reason she cut off her hair, she was tired of the “perfect” girls at her school being loved by all the boys just because they wore five pounds of make up every day and wore skin tight shorts in the middle of winter, and always had perfect hair. She was tired of it, tired of being called ugly just because she chose to not wear makeup, tired being called nerd just because she wore glasses, and loved reading, and had a higher GPA then normal people, but most of all, she was tired of being bullied by those bigger than her. After all she hasn’t even hit five foot by the end of seventh grade, she was an easy target.
After her feeble attempt to actually get some sleep it was already six o’clock, time to start another day…… oh joy. She got dressed in her usual: hoodie to hide how abnormally skinny she was, boring blue jeans, to hide her scared up legs, and beanie, to hide her short blonde hair, and last but probably least, her big brown glasses.
She went to the kitchen to find her single mom and her three brothers, and the smell of burnt toast. She roamed the kitchen to find a quick bite to eat before the bus arrived. She grabbed a granola bar and grabbed her back pack and was off to start another day.
“Bye sweetie, have a great day,” “okay mom I’ll try.” even though in her mind she could already hear the devilish whispers of the so called “popular” girls.
She climbed onto the bus with a small grunt as she lifted her abnormally heavy backpack over her shoulder. As she walked down the aisle of the bus, she dreaded what awaited her at the back of the bus. The only empty seat, next to the two most hated seventh grader twins there is, Dustin and Meredith Hahn, captain and co-captain of the sunset middle school wrestling team, as well as the harshest bullies there are.
“Hey shrimp, what do you think you’re doing?” said Meredith begrudgingly, “um I’m going to sit down, and I don’t want any trouble so could I just sit here and read in peace?,” “not so fast pipsqueak, remember the rules, nobody gets past Dustin and I without getting a beating, so I suggest to turn around and go find another seat, before I through you in one.”
Just the week before the same thing had happened, she had walked to the back of the bus and looked in dismay as she saw the two twins staring at her with their soul piercing blue eyes, it was the same routine every day and she was tired of it, she was tired of being pushed around by those bigger and stronger than her, she had to do something about it, and today was the day she planned to do such a thing.
It was then and there that something in her mind snapped, she had finally had enough of it. It was time to give them what they deserved, a nice beating of their own. She pulled up the sleeves of her hoodie and took off her glasses. As the twins looked up, all Meredith saw was a fist and then plunged into a deep darkness that she would awaken from in a couple minutes.
She couldn’t believe what she had just done, she punched the girl who has been bulling her almost her whole life, and she had finally done it. She had finally stood up to her. All of those words filled with hatred melted away like they didn’t matter anymore, like all that she had said to her was one big lie, all the things she had doubted about herself was because of Meredith. Now it was her turn to feel as bad as she felt. (but now it was her face that was going to feel bad)
Now it was her brothers turn, she looked at him was a smirk and then a wink as she punched him right in the bridge of his nose, and then came the blood, it came out like water from a water fountain, of course then she caught the attention of others, they looked at her with blank stares, then cheers. All of those people who once thought of her as nothing more than an insignificant little 7th grader, but that changed today, she had finally stood up not just for herself but every other boy and girl who has been bullied by those wicked twins.
She had just taken down the two most hated people out of the whole middle school, she was a hero amongst her peers, and she had finally done what she had wanted to do for years.
And then she woke up from yet another dream, from yet another false hope.
