The Bad Job
“You’re a sick man... A spiteful man” Mich looked straight into those reflective eyes and saw herself red-faced and hair out of place with her teeth bared. This was it, absolutely, this was the say she was going the quit. She let out a sigh in front of the bathroom mirror. She knew she was lying to herself, she’d never be able to wrack up the confidence to face boss.
“Oh hey Shelly,” the door suddenly burst open as a woman with neon sky blue nails and crimson hair entered the room with a swagger and a smirk, “I’ve decided to quit today and I was wondering if you can help me pack up my stuff later?” Mich envied Vanessa’s confidence, even if it was overconfidence, and wished she could be as oversaturated in self-esteem as her.
“Um, I like to be called Mich... Actually,” Mich whispered as her eye drifted down to her feet.
“I’m sorry, dear what was that? You’ll have to speak up if anyone is gonna hear you talking,” Vanessa let out a laugh as she crumpled up a paper towel and threw it at the trash can.
“Oh, I said... I said I’m quitting, too!” Oop! Mich staggered as she quickly blurted out her half-truth and regretted it as soon as the words came out of her mouth. Mich felt dizzy and weak-stomached as she looked upon Vanessa’s face and saw a smile so distorted and so wide that it looked like it could swallow the Earth simply by inhaling.
“Oh you are?!” Vanessa gasped in a happy excitement as if a terribly wonderful idea had just crossed her mind and she just had to use it, “Well in that case, we should quit together! We’ll be like a team together, Shelly!” Vanessa grasped Mich’s arm tightly and dragged her across the office building straight to their boss’s office
“Vanessa... Are y-y-oo sure you wanna do this?” Mich’s body was like an earthquake as she trembled before in the opening as she stared into Vanessa’s arrogantly confident eyes, “I mean the job market right now is really rough and, uh, we should look for new, better jobs before we dig ourselves too deep and quit. Yeah, er, I have some job listing back at my cubicle, why don’t we look at them for the rest of the day. Rebellion... We, won’t work for the rest of the day and slow down productivity.” Vanessa’s face transformed into a thinking gesture that looked to be the most serious MIch had ever seen the perpetually cartoony and over-the-top girl.
“Nah! If we back out now, then we’ll never talk ourselves into getting out of this place. And besides that, I can’t stand another day at this job! It’s so boring, the people in charge are beyond rude, and frankly, I need a change of scenery.”
“Yeah I understand what you mean, our supervisor is horrible, but I don’t want to to be jobless.” Mich had calmed down a little and she pulled on Vanessa’s arm, “Come on, let’s just go back to my cubicle and look at the jobs. Before we do something stupid.”
“Well, looks like it’s too late now, Shelly. Oops,” Vanessa twiddled her fingers as Mich turned around to realize that in her panic she had failed to realize that the door had been opened the whole time and their supervisor had heard the whole conversation. Realizing there was no way back now, Mich pulled herself together and put on her sternest face as she tried to keep herself from painting. She knew what she had to do.
“You’re a sick man... A spiteful man.”
