Re-Wound
The barrel touches gently to your temple. Cold steel against skin. Chills run down your spine as you inhale deeply. You exhale and a very small amount of pain is released, but with it a little fear goes too. But you can no longer handle the small releases; you want one that’s permanent. So you slowly close your eyes, set on the decision you have made, and pull the trigger. At the sound of the bang it all should be over. But instead, you open your eyes. You look around the room very confused. All time stands still. You let go of the gun and it hangs fixed in the air. You look into the barrel of the gun and see the bullet frozen at its tip. As you stare, amazed by what you see, the bullet slowly recedes back down the barrel. Time begins moving backwards. Slowly at first, but then it begins to pick up its pace. Carrying you farther and farther into your past. You see glimpses of what is around you. Memories and happenings, thoughts rush through your mind as you remember everything as it appears before you. Then the time lapse stops all in an instant. You look around the room around you and notice that it is no longer the same. Familiar but not what was there before. Then understanding takes over and you run to the calendar. Your eyes widen and your jaw drops as you read the date. Its three years earlier than when this day started. It’s a day before it all began. You run to the bathroom feeling overwhelmed and sick, but as you pas the mirror you freeze. You turn and stare in awe at the person looking back. Its you but a younger you. You look pure and innocent like before. You touch your face in disbelief and as you do, two words become visible across the mirror. “Second chance.” Then they fade slowly until they completely disappear. A smile begins to form upon your lips as you imagine how everything can be different. You step from the bathroom, prepared and once again, happy.
