AP Grapefruit Literature

I walked into the room. Over my head, the lights reflected off of the golden tapestry, while people talked and laughed. A tall figure stood at the head of the room, the highlights dancing in her hair as she grinned. On the desk there stood a large grapefruit with red streaks. The grapefruit was the only thing on the table; it was larger than any I’d seen before.
Laughter and cheers filled the room as I tore my attention away from the round object on the desk. When I looked back a few moments later, it was reflecting the lights like the tapestry until two small children came and grabbed it. They began tossing it between the two of them, smiling brightly as they did. The grapefruit tumbled out of a pair of small hands and rolled to my feet, gently bumping my shoe. I smiled to myself as I returned the grapefruit to the leader’s desk. Beaming at me, she bit into the juicy fruit, sending little rivulets down her chin. All of a sudden an uplifting, citrus-y feeling pervaded the air as more people entered the room with barrels of grapefruit.
Unable to resist, I joined my fellow revelers in dance, openly displaying my rapture through laugh and song, as a chorus of voices rang throughout the hall…
Waking, the darkness weighed heavily on my body, choking my emotions. There was no smell of grapefruit.
