Beginning of a Never-Ending End

When I get to school, Megan’s standing in front of my locker, looking kinda nervous, and I know in my gut she’s gonna break up with me. Although it was a terribly inappropriate time, I couldn’t help but admire how beautiful she was. It was early in the morning so the sun was low on the horizon catching the frizzy outer layer of her wet hair, making it seem as if her personality was radiating out of her. I really did love her, even with the obvious news.

“It’s okay babe, I understand. We tried and that’s all I can ask for,” I told her, trying to sound calm.

She sighed. “Jen, you know if it weren’t for my parents and everyone else things would have been different.”

“I get it.” We were the only lesbian couple in our small mid-western town and no one was very receptive to our relationship. News spread quickly and her parents found out. It was all bad news from there. We tried to be secretive and keep our relationship out of the light but to no avail.

“I love you and I’m so sorry things had to turn out like this,” Megan whispered to me, leaning in close so no one else would hear.

I hugged her tightly, burying my head in the crevice between her neck and shoulder, hoping her hair would hide the last kiss I could ever give her.

“Forever,” I promised.
