Social Debut
Today I went to the store. I wasn’t planning on doing anything special this weekend, but then again, when do I do something fun? I can’t even remember the last time I went out on a Saturday night. Who would want to invite that awkward, quiet girl who eats lunch in the library to their party? I mean, I can’t blame them. It’s not like they’re intentionally excluding me, I’m sure I just don’t even cross their mind.
But it’s not like I want to be one of those typical high school girls anyway, obsessed with a new guy each week and wearing clothes so tight that something is bound to pop out any minute. I look at some of these people and realize that they are at the peak of their lives right now. Sure, girls like Laura might have boys fawning over them 24/7 and fun plans or parties to go to every weekend, but she also has half a brain and probably won’t make it too far in life. If I keep up my grades, I will get into Duke, graduate with honors, get a well-paid job and marry a successful husband. We’ll see who’s laughing then.
It would be nice if Noah even noticed my existence, though. I don’t mean to be superficial or get caught up in stupid high school thinking, but sometimes I just can’t help it. He is just so cute and charming and seems to basically have everything going for him. Starter on the basketball team, gets straight A’s in honors classes, great looks, lots of friends, everyone loves him. So I might as well just get over him now because nothing would ever happen between him and me. Ha, I have to tell myself to get over someone who I’ve barely ever talked to. That sentence sums up my high school experience pretty well.
But anyway, there I was, at the store. Cameron is a pretty small town, so you’re bound to see at least one person you know every time you leave your house. I was walking down the snack aisle when I ran into Anna Moylan, a girl in my calculus class. She is very pretty and fairly popular, but we talk before class every now and then and she seems pretty down to earth. She asked me what I was up to tonight, and not wanting to embarrass myself by straight-up admitting that I planned on staying in and doing homework, I awkwardly stammered and lied that I was possibly going to go out to eat with some friends, but I wasn’t sure yet. And then, it happened. I’m still in shock.
“I’m having some people from school over to my house tonight, you should come!” Anna said.
Wait. Someone actually invited me to their party? Me? I tried to play it cool, but the look on my face must have given away my excitement because she smiled back at me.
“I’m actually here to pick up some snacks and drinks for tonight. Would you mind coming back to my house from here and helping me set up? I heard you have good taste in music, so you could help me make a playlist,” she said.
“Uh yeah, that sounds great! I mean, I’ll have to cancel dinner with my friends, but I’m sure they won’t mind. So, how many people are coming tonight?”
“Probably around 15 girls and 15 guys, plus a few of the boys from the basketball team are going to head over after their game. You know, like Jacob, Alex, Sean, and Noah.” She paused for a second and looked at me, then continued, “You know, you and Noah would make a really cute couple. You’re both super smart, and your looks complement each other well. And he’s not a total conceited jerk like the rest of those guys on the team. You should talk to him tonight!” She then proceeded to look at the variety of chips on the wall, not knowing that she just made my entire month with this short conversation.
Anna Moylan is the most amazing creature to ever exist.
