Louis Sachar, in novel Holes a young teenage boy whom goes by the name of Stanley Yelnats is typical highschool boy from a not so wealthy family. Thanks to this dark distant relative, the Yelnats family had been cursed for generations due to their "no-good-dirty-rotten-pig-stealing-great-great-grandfather." Because of this curse somehow there always seems to be natural trouble or bad luck occurring for the Yelnats.

The ail started when Stanley was accused of stealing a pair of shoes donated by basketball great Clyde "Sweetfeet" Livingston to a shelter. Of course the Judge did not believe when stanley said they fell from the sky, but in actuality thats exactly what had happened. Stanley’s punishments were to either attend jail time or go to Camp Green Lake where the warden teaches troubled boys to learn character by digging holes each day in the hot deserted area.

Soon after, Stanley chose Camp Green lake and learned to improve his character faster than others.Suddenly Stanley came to the conclusion that improving character was not the reason the warden had the boys dig holes, it was because she had been searching for something for years. Being sharp minded, Stanley figured that the curse of his family, digging holes for treasure, and the legend of Kissing Kate Barlow had all clicked to him and the cycle grounded for generations; Stanley found out the truth, the cause of his family curse and was able to break it.

The story Holes is a tragic one and leaves the reader in awe.
Louis Sachar includes these skills to keep the reader anxious to find out what will happen next in the famous novel Holes.
