I grab my books from my locker, and slide them into my backpack. “Yay, more homework for the weekend” I mumble to myself. I lift my (now heavier) bag from the floor and swing it over my shoulder. My locker makes a satisfying click as I slam it shut. “Ro” my best friend Lily calls to me, her blonde hair bobs up and down as she jogs up to me. My name is actually Rose Thompson, but you know friends. Oh and yes, ha-ha were both named after flowers, deal with it.
I laugh “come on, is Rose really that hard to say.” “You know I have to call someone by a nickname, it’s physically impossible for me not to” she counters snickering under her breath. “Fine, fine Ro it is, now what did you come over here for” I say.
Looking at the puzzled look on her face I can tell she forgot, typical Lily she forgets just about everything. “And…” I laugh. She starts tapping her foot, like the stereotypical forgetful person she is. “Ah-ha, do you want to hangout this weekend” she asks nudging my shoulder. Her over the top smile tells me she’s just happy to have remembered. “Well” I say, while I hold up my backpack and tap it. My books tumble around in it “and you know strict my parents are with homework” I sigh. ”The flower duo just can’t get a break” Lily chuckles, even though that nickname died down in the 3rd-grade. I can’t help but explode into laughter still.” I guess talk o you later that is if you remember to check your phone” she replies as she pulls her own phone out for a reminder. I grab my own phone out and hold it up as Lily turns away.
I take a few minutes to grab a few extra things and head outside to greet the bus. Today just happens to be a really nice slightly breezy day, in other words its very nice out. The wind blows my hair into my face and I stumble around trying to wrap my brown hair into a ponytail. After a few seconds of looking something occurs to me. While I’m looking around I realize I missing something, or rather a lack of something. I missed the bus.
“Just greeaaatt” I groan and grit my teeth. I sit down for a second for a break. I pull out my phone and start it up to call my parents to pick me up, but just as I thought I forgot to charge it and the screen stays black. Looking I see the desolate school lot with a circle of clambering kids trying to get rides back to their homes. “Whatever” I say and shove my phone back into my pocket. I’ll just walk, my house isn’t THAT far and on a nice day like this a walk will be good. I smirk at the other ride-less kids and dramatically walk away, just to say ha-ha you’re stuck here. My little walk starts as I get Blossom Park, a small district of shops and such. Taking in the sights with my keen observation I look around at the shops and people busily bustling around to do some chore, shop around, and rushing to get to some event that I don’t know of. While I walk I stop to smell some Roses at a stand like the ironic person I am, I mean they just happen to be my favorite flower. The old woman smiles and gives me one; this is just an adorable town like that. I smile back at her, to say thank you and continue on my way. Anxiously I hold on to my wallet in my pocket, you know just in case I see something in the windows. After a while of searching for something to buy, I lose grip on my wallet and give up as I pass the shops area and into the more rural place.
“The final stretch” I murmur to myself under my breath. Happy to almost be home I pick up the pace. Being the klutz I am though, soon after I start jogging I trip and fall on my face. “Ouch” I yelp and take a few seconds to process what just happened. “Seriously, how do I even fall here” I say sighing at how graceful I am. I do a routine check to see if my shoelaces are untied. The funny thing is they are tied. Quickly, I check the area to find what happened. “Hmm” I say while picking up a stick “you’re pretty troublesome. I hold the stick in my hand and starts getting up, just to you know have a stick. When I get up I feel a tug and fall backward; looking at the bottom of the stick there is a golden star necklace coiled around its end, which must have gotten caught on something. I yank at it chain to take it off, that is while I’m still being careful not to break it. Despite my efforts it was pretty stuck and a link of the chain snaps off. The good thing is it’s not that bad and it’s fixable. Well at least I have it now, I think. I begin to finally head back to home and start to question why I cared some much about the stupid necklace. Might as well fix it when I get home, I slide it into my back pocket. After a bit I finally make it to my own house.
I fumbled around in my pocket to try and find my house key. Please let me have this, tell me I didn’t lose it. Soon I pull the shiny silver key from my pocket, perfect still here. I wait till I hear a small click and proceed to walk through the door. The smell of food fills the room when I enter, just in time for dinner I smirk.
“Rose is that you” my mom says and peeks her head around the corner from the kitchen. “You’re needed in the kitchen” she says, while disappearing from my view. I guess I didn’t miss the setting up for dinner part.
“You know we got you a phone for a reason” My mom says with a short strained laugh. ““Apparently” I state,” someone; not saying any names; forgot to charge her phone.” She just sighs. She then shoves a couple plates and napkins into my arms. “You have to help out” she smiles.
Walking out to our table, I notice only two plates. “Dad's not eating!” I yell at my mom. “At work!” she retorts and then laughs, “We need to stop yelling.” My dad has really weird hour and has a lot of night shifts. My mom slips into her chair a few minutes later with a plate of breaded chicken. I take a couple from the plate and skillfully bring it to my plate without dropping it. We eat in silence for most of the meal, striking only a bit of small talk here and there. “Can you just take better care of your things once in a while” she snaps breaking the silence.
This shocks me and the piece of chicken I have drops from my fork. “Mom, you ok” I stammer. “Fine, fine I just need you to be responsible once I while” she quickly sneers at me. “What did I do?” I shout out. “Please, you never remember to do anything” she replies “you can’t imagine how worried I get when you don’t call me and then show up 30 minutes later without even bringing it up.”
“Mom, look I’m really sorry,” I say in hopes of making this situation right. My mom stays silent and gets up from the table to leave. I don’t even want to see her face right now. “Whatever” I say “I just wish that… that I was alone” I retort, and stand from the table. I angrily stride from the table to the small closet in out hallway. It’s packed full of boxes, when I open it I search for the box labeled tools. Ah-ha there it is I think and then I reach for it only crack open the lid to grab some pliers. Then I jog up the stairs trying to avoid all contact with my mom. I clamp my fingers around the small gold necklace and throw it on my desk. After slamming the door (for effect) I drop to my seat to start tinkering with the necklace. Finally I’m able to rework the necklace and fix it. I stumble over to bed and fall onto it. I’m out in a matter of minutes.
The morning light fills my room through the window shades. I quickly get ready for the day and head down the stairs. Hopefully, I can make things right with my mom and proceed through the day. When I get downstairs the house is quiet, unusually quiet. Almost always someone is up and obnoxiously doing something. As usual I perform a routine check of the house for signs of anybody at all, and with my luck there is absolutely nothing. I pull out my fully charged phone from the night. First, I dial my mom. The dial tone plays for minuets without an end in sight, not even an operator telling me to leave a message.
“Mom never ever leaves her phone off, it’s just… just not in her nature” I say clenching the phone in my hand. What could have happen to her? I end dialing numerous people, but they all end with no reply. She must have left me a note, or…or something. Franticly I search just about every inch of our house, all the way from the kitchen to the living room. What is happening I think, while shuffle around aimlessly with the hope I missed something. After minuets and minuets of torture and when I’m just about to lose, my stomach growls.”No use in going hungry” I mutter to myself, while opening the fridge. Normally I’m all for a healthy breakfast to start the day. But, you know considering the circumstances, I’m not really in the mood right now.
After finishing my breakfast I need some time to just sit and think. Maybe just maybe this is some weird dream that I’m having and I’m really just lying in bed right now. I decide the best thing to do is pinch myself. “Ouch” I squeal, ok that doesn’t mean anything. Well, I nod to myself if no one is here I better find someone. Going through my pantry I grab provision and stuff them into a bag that I sling over my shoulder. I scribble a message on a sticky not and head out, if somehow anyone shows ups they’ll know where I am.
The best place to start is probably Blossom Park, which is probably more like our towns everything. Anything you need is usually there, and thus my adventure starts. I run probably the fastest I’ve ever ran in my life. As I dreaded the entire place is deserted. Might as well use it to my advantage I smile. Anything I want to do all right here. I could rob and entire store and nobody would think twice, well I mean no one would be there too.” First things first” I say. I zip open the bag over my shoulder and dump everything out. I can eat anywhere and get anything why would I need this stuff. Wait second thought, I think to myself and drop the bag on the floor. Who needs this bag when I can get a completely new one, hmm? I see a small boutique at a corner between a street, perfect. I run in happy to be able to really do anything, but the bell on the door still make me jump. I scan the racks until I find a nice bag, and swing it over my shoulder. I empty the crumpled paper that keeps the bag’s shape, throw on some sunglasses, and stroll out the door humming to myself. The day goes great. Through the entire day I shopped, ate, had a walk, and watched a movie at the theater (after taking 20 minutes to find how the projector worked, and leaving half-way through the movie). “Well, I’m tired” I yawn and start walking towards the town’s public library. I shall end the day with a book. Searching the rows of books I find one. It’s a cute little novel that looks well adorable. I plop down in a bean bag chair start the book. After 10 minutes of reading I give up and just start to think. You know by now would have called a bunch of people just to talk and that’s cause I haven’t had a social conversation all day. This happens and no one is around to talk about it with. Well, that and it is only Saturday. Because yesterday was so lucky for me today had to be great. I even find a star necklace, the international symbol of wishes. What do I wish for you ask, I wish to be alone.
Placing the book down I think to myself, I want to go home. I take a quick stop at a bike shop. Please, I’m not walking back home. Then with that I’m off and before I know it I’m back home. The door swings open, yup responsible old me. I don’t even care enough to lock the door again. I sigh and walk through the door until thud. “Seriously, come on I trip again” I say getting up and dusting myself off. Looking down I see the cause of my fall. On the floor, I see my backpack entirely open and laying there. There are books sliding out of it like some broken piñata. I must have left it there after I got home. “Mom was right, I couldn’t remember anything if I tried” I say and sit on the ground to clean up the mess of papers. Putting everything back together I notice my unfinished homework. Yup, of course I forgot about it. How the day started out, me promising to do my homework first thing. What do I do you ask? What I usually do totally disregard it. So dumb, mom really was right I probably would have forgotten. Well, if I hadn’t left it out in the middle of the floor. I push my backpack to the wall and slowly walk up the stairs. I crawl in to my bed and pull the covers while I just stare at the ceiling. “Sorry mom” I mumble to myself and shut my eyes.
The morning light shines through my windows as it always does. This time however I feel at home. Downstairs I hear the noise of a coffee maker going off and the sound of a TV. Yup, I’m not alone I say. I get ready as fast as possible and dart down the stairs. There my mom is in the kitchen. I Run up to her and wrap her up in a big hug and smile.
The End
