The Rock
I stepped outside the classroom, looking to the right. “Where you going punk?” came a voice from the opposite direction. I jumped back, stifling a curse. “Why can’t he bother someone else!?!?!?” I screamed in my head. “Well, I’m his favorite target, that why.” I thought as I backpedaled away.“Nowhere,” I answered. Cal, that’s his name. A burly overgrown piece of maggot that is sorry for himself! He nodded to his buddies and they surrounded me. “Where are you going with the books, nerd?” he sneered. “I have to get out of here before I get in trouble!” I thought. Cal knocked the books out of my hand. I looked into the hole in their group, desperate to get away. Cal saw me looking and said in a mocking voice, “Little baby wants to crawl away,” then he and his friends laughed. I started to get angry. He noticed and teased me even more. I swung a punch at him, my fist a blur. Cal staggered back, holding his mouth, blood trickled from his mouth and between his fingers. His buddies were stunned, I took the moment to dash down the hall. But it is in vain, I ran into a wall of checkers, I looked up and saw the school principal staring at us. “Detention, both of you!” He said angrily.
I got on the bus, in my usual seat. I was the first so I have time to think, but the bus quickly filled up with noisy kids. As I sat there, a satisfying sensation came when I reviewed what happened today, I am not proud of myself for being caught, but that Cal deserved what I did to him. The bus rumbled to life and I was quiet all the way home.
I opened the door as quietly as I could, but it creaked. My mom looked over at me and said in a voice that send shivers down my back and the back of my head tingle, “Come here.” I tried to run, but she stood over me and started yelling, “WHAT DID YOU THINK YOU WERE DOING, GETTING INTO A FIGHT AND DETENTION!!! WHAT DID YOU THINK YOU WERE DOING!!” I started losing control, “He was teasing me, mom.” THEN WHY DID YOU HIT HIM! came the reply. “I’m done.” I said and went to my room. I slammed the door shut and locked it.
One day passed and I was stuck back in the classroom. As I sat down to work, I looked back. There he was, Cal in all his glory, sneering at me. I turned my attention to the teacher, ever so quietly, rip, rip, rip! I dared not turn my attention back after my incident. Spito, spito, spito. Five spitballs hit me, sending disgust rolling down my spine. I whirled on him, “Stop it!” I shouted. The teacher calmly asked, “What are you doing, Joe?” I sat back down, my face red. “Nothing, Mrs. White,” I said. Everybody is staring at me, their attention never wavered, I quivered under their gaze. All except Cal, who has a smirk as big as Antarctica itself.
I pulled down the ladder to the attic. The attic is old and musty, it have an aura of calm that I like. The attic is always where I go to think. I rummaged around and found junk, old pictures, doll, teddy bears and such. Under everything, there’s a rock, just like any ordinary rock, but I felt a connection between it. I sat down with it and I finally after so long, fell into a deep, calm sleep “I must have fallen asleep,” I said to myself. I pushed myself up and sat on the old, creaky chair. I opened the palm of my hand and found the rock sitting there. I rolled the around rock in my palm. It had an inscription on it that I could barely make out. It said,”You have one wish. You can have anything. Just say it to the rock.” As I thought, “Is it a prank?” But deep inside, I know that it is not. I considered the possibilities and I suddenly realized the power I have, I could do or have ANYTHING!!!! As I sat there, daydreaming about what I can have. The weekend passed quickly with the help of dreaming and video games. The day came that I have to go back to school. As I was on the bus, nobody bothered me, to which I appreciated greatly. When arriving at the school, I gingerly took a step out and look around. Despair wound up inside me as I saw Cal coming my way. I took a deep breath and say to the rock, “I wish that everyone, unless I say so otherwise, will be nice to me.” The air hummed after I spoke the last word, but no one else seems to notice. The world shifted until I am dizzy, then it all stopped. Cal walked over, and amazingly said, “Hey yo, what’s up?” I let out my breath, not even knowing that I was holding it. “Nothing really,” I replied, a bit stunned. I walk into the school, everybody greeted me like I’m their friend, even the teachers. I was suddenly everyone’s best friend, and I like it that way. :)
