The Move
John got up and rolled out of bed, squinting, as he the bright morning light blinded him. As his vision cleared he saw his room. His usual messy, unorganized room wasn't anywhere to be found. There wasn't any trash, worn clothing, or any food in sight. But in its place there was a plain empty room, peaceful without any of its chaos. He was going miss this place he realized. John sighed as he opened the window to let the cool, crisp air penetrate his lungs. The view of the countryside was amazing. From where he was, John could see all the places from his childhood. The river where his dad had first taught him how to fish, the forest where his older brother ,Mack ,had taught him everything he needed to camp in the wilds, or the workshop where his dad had taught him how to use tools. He sighed again as he got ready to leave for Massachusetts. John took a quick shower and got changed into a simple T-shirt and a pair of jeans. Now all there was to do was to wait for Old Man Bob.
Old Man Bob was a plump, old man in his seventies, but had surprising strength. He was good friends with John's grandparents and was often referred as Bob. Bob helped John load the car with luggage, and started the car. John took a seat next to him, but since he had nothing to do so he pulled out his headset and turned on some country music as they headed for the airport. He passed by many shops, stores, houses, and buildings that he fondly remembered. Bob glanced back and he saw the look on John's face.
"Feeling homesick, son." asked Bob.
"Uh, yes sir." replied John
"Ah... I see, it's your first time leaving home, is it not. "
"Yes sir"
"Well you see your dad had that same sad look when I took him to the airport."
"He did?!"
"Aye, he was around your age I believe."
"Where was he going."
"The same place as you are lad, College."
"Oh! where did he go.".
"He went the same place you are lad, Harvard."
"He did?!"
"Yup."
"How did he do."
"Well he ... Sorry lad but we're here."
They had finally arrived at KCI, Kansas City international Airport. John stopped to look at the airport itself. It was huge. That was the most apt description he could think of. "Watch it!" exclaimed Bob when John almost collided with a running man. "Watch where you're going" the man angrily shouted. "Anyways let's get you ready for your flight" Bob suggested. As they unloaded the bags John wondered what Massachusetts would be like. As he entered the airport he immediately noticed how crowded it was, and was lost. He had spent almost 30 minutes trying to find the check-in. Luckily he met a friendly security guard who directed him to the proper gate and helped john get checked-in. Afterward he was directed towards the airport security where he was screened and was officially inside the airport.
John waited in line to board the plane and finally after 10 minutes he was in the plane and ready to go. As the plane started to move the seat belt light turned on and from the intercom, the captain broadcasted "We are now taking off please put on your seat belts securely". Taking off was exhilarating, he felt as if he was sinking into the chair then floating. After staring out the window for half an hour John got board. He took out his trusty headphones and watched many movies until they served lunch. There were many different choices but he chose an apple, ham sandwich, and a Coke. Then came turbulence. It was the most hair raising moment in john's life. The flight was smooth then suddenly the plane jerks around as the captain commands through the intercom "Please stay seated and buckle your seatbelts. We are experiencing turbulence!". The plane continued to shake and jerk, until finally it smoothened out. But, that didn't stop him from not moving from his seat, tightly buckling the seat belts, and digging his nails into the armrests until the plane touched the ground.
As John exited the plane he was directed to the check-out there he gave his passport, ticket and left to claim his bags at the baggage claim. The conveyor belt kept on rotating as bags circled around. People looked for their bag and then pulled it out of the loop. A while later he saw his own bags and pull them out to inspect them. Nothing was broken and they were only slightly dusty. John walked down a large corridor and at the end he found many people waiting for other passengers. As he searched the group he found Mack waiting for Him.
"Hey, Mack!" John called out.
" Hey little bro" Mack replied grinning.
"How have you been."
"Decent"
"Well where's Mom and Dad?"
"Their at the house... We should get going"
They exited the airport where the smell hit me. John clutched his nose and doubled over. "Aw...What is that smell!" he exclaimed. "Oh right you've never been to the city right." he replied. John nodded. "Well... the cities air is polluted so much that it stinks. This is also part of the reason mom and dad didn't come". "Makes sense" he groaned as we got in Mack's car.
On his way home John saw a totally different scenery. It was much more densely built and there were much taller buildings. The lakes and rivers were littered with garbage, and all the cars emitted dark black smoke. As he arrived "Home" he saw a much smaller house than he expected, and asked Mack about it."In the city houses are much smaller because of the lack of space". But, when he entered he was greeted by his parents this made his day a lot better. They had a feast and had a small party. John finally had come home
