August 2022 Fiction Contest - my beautiful, painful little secret

I was not the only one surprised to see them back together, the whole school on the bleachers was. The bright orange sunset took me back to the days that slipped away so fast when we had secret dates under the bleachers. We skipped evening classes just to cuddle in the dark, our long shadows danced on the empty sports track. I was not allowed to call you mine, but I had faith in you, and you, I don’t know. You were my beautiful, painful little secret. But that was long before I told her all.
