Indigos legs refused to move. She stared at the door of this warehouse, knowing what awaited. But she had to. That… thing, wouldn't stop killing if she didn’t do this. Magdalena would be here soon to stop her. She didn't have a choice. It was this or hundreds more lives while she hid safely away. She couldn't live with that blood on her conscience.
A deep power forced her legs to move and she opened the door, surveying the room. Her spine tingled as she saw no one. “Relicta?”
“It's Kuro,” an emerging shape said. She looked at it. The head was lowered, but she caught glints of glowing red through the dark hair. "Have a seat." the figure gestured at a bloodstained table.
“You aren’t Kuro.” She was staring at a warped monster of hate. That wasn’t her sister. That wasn’t the girl who raised her despite being only a year older. This monster wasn’t the one who read her stories at bedtime, or assured her the nightmares weren't real in the dead of night. This killer hadn’t protected her from their parents over and over, at any cost, or sang her lullabies when she couldn't sleep even though Kuro hated singing.
“Yes, I think I am. You don't get to tell me who I am anymore.” Indigo tensed as Relicta walked into the moonlight, fondling a dagger. Her death. She could feel it plunge into her heart, imagine herself fading into the night forever. She had only a few minutes to wait. Her heart beat more stubbornly. The fear almost made her run home and cry for Kuro. Too many lives were on the line. Kuro was gone. She didn't have a choice.
“I’m here. Get it over with.” she was so afraid. She tried not to let it show. She knew if anyone could tell, it would be the one who had chased away the monsters. She never thought Kuro would be the monster. But part of it was true. She wanted this done, she couldn't stand the fear and tension, or seeing Kuro so warped. She was afraid and she was going to die. She wanted it over with.
“Oh, can't we talk like civilized people?” electricity shot down her spine at the tone.
“Civilized people don't murder so many over a mistake.” She tried to hide the voice crack. She pushed some rainbow hair over her face to hide the tears of pure fear.
Kuros voice was so even. “It wasn't a mistake.”
“I didn't-” know what she was going to say. But she was cut off anyway.
“Know I was watching? Yeah, obviously. I wonder what else you did when you thought i wasn't watching?”
Somehow, this line, the least terrifying of them yet, struck the most fear. She needed Kuro. Kuro had to be in there somewhere, right?
She tried to make eye contact and search for a trace of black iris, or the depth of love. “Kuro, where are you?”
The head shot up with a grimace of hate. Indigo yelped at the burning eyes, only red flame. Where was her sister? She gasped another cry and tried to tear her eyes way. She couldn't.
Relicta nodded to no one. “Shall we finish this?”
Indigo tensed, but managed to nod. “You- You’ll stop killing people?”
“I said i would, didn't I? We have an agreement.” Indigo froze, her blood turning to ice, as the monster approached her, holding a dagger. She couldn't hold in a whimper as it was placed over her heart. But all she could think of was Kuro. her life didn't flash, she just saw her sister, her sister who loved her more than anything in the world, hug her and promise to protect her. The fear washed away as she forgot where she was and felt Kuros phantom arms. Kuro would protect her. She always did.
“Hold still.” The words came from far away. She vaguely felt blood bead. She didn't care. But Kuro, her Kuros voice reached her and she saw reality. The red eyes flickered and the flames disappeared for a moment. She met the dark, deep eyes filled with horror and love and fear. “Sister…” Sister.
Before she could react the dagger whirled and plunged the other way. She screamed but Kuro didn't react, falling slowly, like a petal in the wind. The body dropped to the floor in milliseconds- no, millions of years. But it was dead before it hit the ground. She lunged forward and held her, feeling her tears wash the still face. She heard screams from another universe, but they were the ugliest sound she had ever heard.
She could only keep repeating Kuros name, sure it was just a trick, somehow Kuro had survived, she had to survive! She wished the dagger had bitten her instead, wished she had never shown that stupid poem, wished she had never met Magdalena to show the poem too. But no, it was ok, it had to be! Kuro wasn’t dead. It was just a bad dream, and she would wake up and Kuro would be there and hold her and tell her it was all ok.
Faintly she heard a door close and footsteps. She didn't feel the arms around her or the blond hair spilling onto her and Kuro’s wet faces. Only Kuro existed in the moment.
Somehow she woke up. Why hadn't Magdalena done something? Why hadn't she? But in the moment, she didn't care. All her grief turned into rage as she lost control. Magdalena was in danger.
She floated a foot off the ground, her eyes white voids and her face frozen in a horrible pained expression. She waved her hand and created an illusion. Kuro stood up and was ok. Indigo lowered and ran to her, still in a different state, and curled in her arms. But she passed through. The floor began to violently shake, random chunks of earth going in random directions. Magdalena tried to avoid it but there was no safe place.
While she was distracted, a hooded man walked behind her carefully. But one of the peices of concrete erraticlly moved him knocked him over and he cried out in suprise. Magdalena turned and stared.
“Who are…?”
“Madalena of the third power. Come with me.”
“Or what?”
“Your friend will meet the same fate as her sister. Or maybe suceed.”
“What do you mean?”
“I will harness her grief and have her work for me. I’ll make her blame you and seek your blood. I’ll make her hate you and then magnify that to such intense proportions she would kill every other human in existence to get to you. Just like her sister.”
“It was you?”
Indigo turned, apparently having heard and understood enough. Under him, the stone dropped into a deep pit, over which she put a lid. She wanted to kill him. But she wanted to do worse more, so she waited.
Magdalena walked over to her and caught her hand, gently pulling her down. “When…” her voice cracked. “When Autumn died… I… She was here. She got dragged here. Bellatrix, Falcons wife, wanted to kill her because she killed him. She spent an hour torturing her until… until the most alive, passionate, strong person I ever knew begged to die. I got there just when it happened. I was too late.” Magdalena swallowed.
“The things I felt then can't be put into words. I know you understand. I thought the pain would never go away, and in that moment, all I wanted was to hurt her. I killed her. I almost died. She won, in the end. She killed Autumn. She killed a piece of me. And no matter what I did to her, it didn't change that. I still don't know how to heal. But it won't go away, no matter how long or hard you try. You have to live with it. That’s why I failed again. I saw you… sitting where she died… about to be killed, and I couldn’t move.” Indigos floating had slowed.
“But you have to be strong. For Kuro, and Autumn. I saw enough. She knew what was happening. She died on purpose, so you could live. You have to go on for her. You have to go on for me. I can't lose any more. I'm not strong enough. The strong ones die first. They leave the rest of us here. But maybe we can learn to be strong too… I don't know.”
Indigo fell to the ground and the white washed from her eyes, swept away by a flood of tears. “Shes… really gone?” Magdalena pulled her into a hug and they cried together. Indigo pushed up the cage holding Ekwuno. It crushed him against the top. They collapsed.
Neither of them saw a pair of eyes that had observed the whole thing burn briefly with hate, then leave.
