Ghost
“What are you?”
“A ghost.”
“Why are you here?”
“I died here.”
“How did you die?”
“….”
“I asked-“
“I know what you asked.”
“What were you doing here?”
“Same as you.”
“I am questioning you… How could you do that?”
“I didn’t.”
“But you just said you did.”
“Yes.”
“Are you saying you are a liar?”
“No.”
“Ugh, never mind. Can you leave here?”
“Not yet.”
“Yet? What are you waiting for?”
“Something.”
“Care to elaborate?”
“No.”
“What’s your name?”
“Aeron.”
“Mine is Stephanie.”
“Okay.”
“Why is your hair all white? Why do you look like a smeared oil painting?”
“I have been here too long.”
“What do you mean?”
“I have no strength.”
“Oh. I’m sorry. What does it feel like to die?”
“Why are you so nosy?”
“I’m not nosey! I am merely expressing the healthy amount of curiosity expected of one who is talking to a ghost.”
“Oh.”
“Haven’t you talked to other people?”
“No. Not for three centuries.”
“Did you die then?”
“Yes.”
“Is that why your clothes look so old?”
“Yes.”
“Did you have a family?”
“….”
“Oh. I am sorry, I didn’t realize how that may be a sensitive topic. You don’t need to answer.”
“It is fine. I had a family.”
“What were they like? Where are they now?”
“They were family. They are under the earth now.”
“Where are their spirits? Are they ghosts to?”
“I do not know.”
“Why not?”
“I cannot leave.”
“Why?”
“I am bound.”
“By what?”
“….I…cannot say.”
“Why? Is it a ghost secret?”
“I suppose.”
“Do you need to eat or drink?”
“Yes and no. I am hungry.”
“What do you mean yes and no? Why are you hungry?”
“It is hard to explain. I require…substance. Not food. I have not received any substance in centuries. I am hungry.”
“Why haven’t you gotten…substance?”
“I have been alone for three centuries.”
“So you get substance from humans? Is it because we are alive?”
“Hmm? Oh, yes, I suppose. So very hungry…”
“What are you doing now?”
“I am hungry…”
“Is that how you died? Starvation?”
“You could say that….”
“Stop it, Aeron…..”
“No…”
“I-it’s cold.”
“Thank you…”
“Wait! Don’t leave me! Aeron!”
“….”
“I-I-I am c-c-c-cold… W-what d-d-d-did you d-d-d-do to m-m-me?”
“I stole your strength…”
“W-why?”
“So I can leave this place.”
“W-w-w-what’s going to h-h-happen to me?”
“Depends. You must want to live.”
“W-w-what? I…I…it hurts… Make it stop, Aeron…”
“Do you want to live, Stephanie?”
“Yes.”
“So did I.”
“Aeron! Aeron, come back! Aeron!”
“Aeron…”
“I’m cold, Aeron…”
“So cold…”
