Introduction
Everett was finally home, it had felt like years for him to return to have returned to his Origin.
He looked through every room, it was exactly how he had left it. His family was gone, but he knew they
Would be. He would have to start over, he thought. Then to his horror, at that very moment The Leader
walked into His Origin. His stomach dropped at the sight.
Chapter 1
Everett awoke to a chamber that was not his own, and was filled with screams and cries of
Others. He was dazed and confused to where he was and why. He looked around the room, but saw
Nothing, it was maliciously dark.
He sat up from wherever he was lain. He felt a sharp pain in his head, he eerily rubbed it, but it
did nothing to help. He didn’t remember who he was, or why he was in a chamber. He felt like
something had went wrong. Like this devious place was something he deserved. A chill went down his
spine as he shook the confusing thought.
Shortly after this a door opened to his chamber. Which brought light into his darkened prison,
But also enhanced the screams of whoever else was here. The light blinded Everett, but he managed to
Make out two figures.
“Oh, so he is still alive” An outlined figure mumbled
“I told you he would be, if he keeps it up he will make it another week.” Another figure uttered.
“After last nights Retribution, I thought he would be gone for sure.”
Everett had a violent flashback. It was one of pain and agony, suffering beyond his comprehension.
He envisioned a chair, with restraints on the arm rests. In a dark room with a spotlight that seemed to
Be hovering over the chair. Then vividly his memory recounted a face. It was a face of an older man, he
Couldn’t remember who this character was. With his face came a feeling of sever hate, like this man
Was the reason he was here.
“Stop screaming Everett! It’s only a flashback, you do this every day.” One of the outlines
muttered. Quickly Everett searched his surroundings, he was on the floor of his chamber. His throat
throbbed like his vocal cords had been ripped out.
What happened? Why does my throat hurt so much? How did I get on the floor? Everett
Questioned to himself.
“What happened?” Everett shakily asked in a scratchy voice.
“It was a flashback, to the Retribution, you were kicking and screaming like a child.”
Everett swiftly came to the realization that the screams he heard when he first awoke, were from the
same flashback lapse he had. Once the realization that everyone was suffering just like him, he had a
flash of anger. He dragged his body instantly off the ground and at the two men. The two men were
caught off guard and fell over from the impact of Everett’s body. Everett abrasively raised himself
before the two men could react. He ran out of his chamber, into a long brick wall hallway.
“You idiot, you won’t make it anywhere, I can’t wait to see you back tomorrow!”
One of the men yelled furiously. As Everett ran down the hallway, he heard gasps and shrieks of fright
From workers. They all stood watching and gasping, but none of them tried to stop him. He looked
Back down the long hallway, to see the two men weren’t running after him. They simply watched him,
Almost seemingly saying they wanted him to go.
Once Everett made it to the end of the hallway, there was a wooden door. Above the door it
Said “exit”, he moved his hands to forcefully push open the door. The door creaked as the handle curled
Allowing him to escape to the next room. Once he entered, he saw that there was a long flight of stairs.
He scarcely murmured to himself before lunging his body at the stairs, trying to maneuver between each
Step as fast as possible.
As he started down the stairs he started having faint memories come back to him. Not vividly
Like he had in the chamber, he was still conscious when it was happening. First he recovered his name.
“Everett, yeah that’s it.” He thought as he was still pacing down each individual stair. Then he started to
Recover his family’s faces. He remembered his moms’ face, soft and welcoming. Then he remembered
His sisters’ face, a strong feeling of tragedy and loss followed it, but his memory only took him this far.
“Why is my sisters face such saddening thought? Did I do something to her? Is that why I am at
this place?” He questioned himself. His straining questions stopped when he realized he finally reached
the end of the staircase. With all thought left behind, he swung open the door. The door led to the
outside of the building. Outside the building was large and tall, almost menacing in size. He turned
from the nightmarish building, to see there was other buildings that looked just like the one he
escaped. There were long straight streets with block corners. These streets looked to have almost
been never ending. Beyond the buildings that looked like the one he escaped from, he noticed houses.
He saw no people around or visibly in these houses. He noticed one house in particular, it was a red-
Painted single story home. Once He visualized this house, he had a violent flashback that through him
To the ground in horror. He saw his mom and his sister, with him at the kitchen table. It was early
morning and breakfast was served on the table. They were passing food around and laughing as a
family. Then with a quince of pain he remembered the Leader and his soldiers rushing into their home.
Knocking down items, flaunting towards them, they had no regards for Everett’s family or their
Belongings.
“You are sentenced to Capital punishment” He remembered a soldier yelling
“For speaking out against our Leader and our System.” Another howled.
He remembered that when given Capital Punishment, the family unit members also received
A punishment, removal. They were chased out of what was known of the world to the people, to the
Wilderness, surely to die.
Everett breathed heavily as he regained consciousness, he was behind a building, behind the
Garbage deposal. He quietly picked himself, unaware of his surroundings. He tried to mutter words to
Himself, but he had lost his voice, he could no longer speak. Once realizing this he stumbled to the
Street, he looked around, trying to find any idea of where he was. He noticed a street sign named
“Jonas”. He lived on that block, he remembered.
I must go back and see what’s left, I will gather my things and leave to the wilderness.
Everett argued with himself. Trembling he ran as fast as he could back to his Origin.
“Oh so are little guinea pig is back to his pen?” Leader exalted. In the blink of an eye before Everett
Could recover from what was happening. Leader grabbed him and stabbed his neck with a syringe.
The room became darker for Everett, until he lost consciousness.
Everett awoke to a chamber that was not his own, and was filled with screams and cries
of others. He was dazed and confused to where he was and why. He looked around the room, but saw
Nothing, it was maliciously dark.

An Episode of Black Mirrors inspired this paper. I hope people will
get a dark image and presentation to the idea that the world is not
always happy, but can also be a dark place. Also people may
possibly take this article as a metaphor, which can be related to
