#SATPrep
Characters:
Lily – a secluded girl who decides to stay after school on a whim. She is somewhat secretive and cold. She wears a dark, black jacket and skinny jeans. Her hair is long, straight, and dark.
Michael – a typical jock. He wears his letterman’s jacket, blue jeans, and tennis shoes.
Misha – a “normal” kid. On the nerdy side, he wears glasses, khakis, and button-up with a tie.
Carrie – the clichéd whiny popular girl. She smacks her gum loudly everywhere she goes. She wears a pink Hollister shirt and Ugg boots under white skinny jeans.
Annie – a girl so immersed in technology she doesn’t speak to anyone without it. She wears a light blue tee-shirt (the color of twitter), shorts, and tennis shoes.
Set: School Classroom. Desks and chairs face stage right, towards a white board upstage right. It is tilted so that the scrawled “SAT Prep” on the board is visible to the audience.
[Movement: LILY sits quietly in her chair, scrolling on her iPhone with a bored expression. MICHAEL sits, leaning back in his chair, his feet propped up on the desk as he fiddles with his handheld gaming system. CARRIE is seated on her desk, crossing her legs in front of her while she giggles at whatever text conversation she’s having on her Android. ANNIE is on the floor, cross-legged downstage, in front of her chair, giggling and typing on her smartphone. MISHA’s chair is vacant, though his papers and backpack occupy one of the desks. He sits instead on the desk next to his to make room for his Tablet (the kind that can connect to a keyboard), which he stares at intently. There is the sound of a storm raging outside.]
Misha [eyes still focused on the screen]: It’s getting pretty bad out there. They just updated the local weather news thread.
Michael [Not looking up from his game]: Please, I’ve played in worse weather than this. Besides, they didn’t even cancel Prep.
Carrie: Wish they had. I hate this stupid thing. Where’s Mr. Mather anyway? Michael?
Michael: How ’m I supposed to know? We’re the only four here. Maybe everyone else ditched because of the storm. Now can you shut up? I’m almost to my high score.
Misha [to himself]: I wonder why they didn’t cancel after school activities, at least. There’s supposed to be a tropical storm or something just north of here, right? [He begins to click away at his keyboard again]
Carrie: Ugh, I don’t know. They didn’t say it was cancelled on the announcements, did they? [no one answers] Anybody?
Michael: You assume I listen to the announcements.
Misha: My last class is kind of loud…I can never hear anything in there, sorry.
[Annie shrugs]
Carrie: You guys suck. What about you? Um…sorry, I forgot your name. Lana or something.
[Lily looks up, her reaction to being spoken to slightly delayed. She shrugs, irked that Carrie didn’t remember her name.]
Lily: It’s Lily…and I don’t really pay attention to the announcements. Sorry.
[Carrie rolls her eyes obviously and Michael scoffs at her exaggeration. Misha looks at Lily
Misha: Hey, wait. You’re in my Government class, aren’t you?
Lily: I don’t know, am I? Why do you ask?
Misha: Sorry, um, I’m Misha. It’s just that I knew I recognized you but I haven’t seen you on the SAT Prep register befo--
Lily [shrugs]: I’m not on it. This was a last minute decision.
Carrie: Well no one’s prepping for anything right now since Mr. Mather still hasn’t shown up. I swear to God, if this thing got cancelled and I didn’t hear about it I’m going to slap someone.
Michael: Don’t throw a b**** fit, Carrie. So long as –
[A loud sound of thunder interrupts him, and Misha turns back to the window.]
Misha: Jeez. That was right overhead. Told ya it’s bad.
Carrie [looking at her phone]: My weather app says that it’s seventy degrees and partly cloudy outside. I need a new phone.
Misha: The weather thread hasn’t updated yet.
Carrie [overlapping]: This isn’t some kind of tornado thing is it?
Misha: Uh, no. Doesn’t look like it. They would have put out a warning.
Carrie [groaning]: Oh my god.
Michael: Anyone got iPod headphones?
[Misha looks over to Annie, still sitting on the floor staring at her phone.]
Misha: It’s Annie, right? Are you looking at weather reports, too?
[Annie just shakes her head without looking up]
Carrie: Don’t bother. She’s in my math class. She just sits there on Twitter the entire time – doesn’t even talk.
Misha: Oh, alright. Um, sorry.
Michael: Okay, thanks no one.
Carrie: What?
Michael: Nothing.
[Silence as they all return to their technology. All is silent except for the sound of Michael’s video game and the clicking of phone keyboards. Suddenly, the storm gets louder, and a loud BOOM of thunder sounds overhead. The lights flicker, and then go out completely. Michael jerks, still staring at his game, and hits the console with his hand as if trying to turn it back on]
Michael: No! No no no no no! I was almost at my high score!
Misha [clicking one button repeatedly on his keyboard]: Dang it! My tablet is dead.
Lily [reading from her phone]: “No service”
[Annie squeaks and starts pressing buttons on her phone repeatedly in a panic. Carrie groans.]
Carrie: Could this day get any worse?
[There is complete silence in the room. Everyone looks around, as if seeing their surroundings for the first time. The students lock eyes with each other, looking suddenly uncomfortable. Annie is notably stressed about this new development. She stands up, still trying to fix her phone. In a panic, she looks at the other children in the room with wide eyes, before noticing the board. Suddenly, she drops her phone on the desk and scurries over to the white board and picks up an expo marker. She writes “Power gone. Service gone. Life over. #gonnadie”]
Lily: Is she…?
Misha: One-hundred-forty characters or less.
Carrie: Fantastic! She’s completely nuts. I told you, she never talks! Just tweets. All the time! She’s completely insane!
[Annie erases her message and writes: “Shut up Carrie No 1 likes U. #tiredofyourface”]
Michael: Oooh, you just got burned by crazy twitter chick.
[Thunder strikes again and all the children tilt their heads up, listening. Annie erases and writes as the following dialogue takes place: “Can’t stand this. #freakedout #gonnadie”. Carrie suddenly throws down her cell phone.]
Carrie: I can’t freaking take this! I’m out of here. Sayonara, losers, have fun dying at an SAT Prep session!
Michael: Woah, hey, chillax, Carrie! If you didn’t hear Dork of the Day over there before, there is a pretty big storm going on out there!
[Realizing who they’re talking about, Misha lets out a huff]
Carrie: Shut up, Michael, I don’t live far. I am not going to sit here without doing anything.
[she attempts to leave, but Michael grabs her arm. The others look on silently.]
Michael: Jeez, fine, fine! At least…let me go along. I have an umbrella and it wouldn’t look very good if I let you get blown away by some storm. Plus I’m not too eager to sit around here with Tweetybird and company either.
Lily [sarcastically]: Thanks.
[Misha shrugs. Carrie groans at Michael, but sighs]
Carrie: Okay, fine! Come on then!
[Michael grabs an umbrella from his desk as Michelle already begins walking off stage]
Misha: Guys, you really shouldn’t, that storm is getting really ba—
[The two exit before he can finish]
Lily: Good riddance.
[Annie writes “#Ditto” on the board]
Misha [trying to get his computer working again]: I’m still worried.
Lily [looking at her useless phone, twisting it in her hands]: Please. They’ll be fine. The apartment complexes are just past the parking lo—
[she drops the phone as she plays with it, and she and Misha both lean to get it. Their hands touch and they look up at each other, their wide eyes meeting for the first time. Annie begins to hum loudly the tune of “Here comes the bride” and writes “#loveatfirsteyecontact” on the board. Lily picks up her phone and puts it on the desk without looking at it as Misha helps her stand.]
Misha[nervously]: Um…hi.
Lily [chuckles]: Hi.
Misha: You said it was a last minute decision coming here, right?
Lily [nodding confusedly]: Yes…
Misha: You should make those more often. Last minute decisions, I mean.
[Lily smiles]
Misha: I can’t believe I never noticed you before…you’re…so pretty…and in my Government class.
Lily [giggling]: You’re cute. And…thanks.
[Annie looks at the couple and heaves a sigh, writing #foreveralone on the board as Misha and Lily stare at each other.]
[Suddenly Michael and Carrie burst back in the room, both of them wet, with Michael’s umbrella blown the wrong way in his hands. Annie writes “#uhoh” on the board.]
Carrie: Okay, so that was a bad idea.
Michael: A terrible idea. I told you, but no, you just had to walk outside in the middle of a freaking hurricane!
Carrie [to Misha and Lily]: We barely made it outside before Michael’s umbrella almost got us killed.
Michael: Yeah, that and the hurricane. You should be thanking me, you know.
Carrie: Okay fine, whatever. Thank you. [To Misha and Lily]: So, I’m guessing the power hasn’t come back on?
[Misha and Lily appear not to have heard any of this, both of them still looking at each other lovingly.]
Carrie: Guys? Seriously! We were gone for like a minute!
Michael [sarcastically]: Young love. How cute.
[Annie writes: “#breakfastclubanyone”, and seeing it, Michael and Carrie both laugh, genuinely, for the first time. Misha and Lily look away from each other to see the board and begin laughing as well. Even Annie laughs, along with writing “LOL” on the board next to her joke.]
[Suddenly the lights blink, then flicker back on. There is the sound of phone’s buzzing, a Twitter bird chirping tone, and even Michael’s game’s music. There is a BEAT of silence, but after a small moment of hesitation, Annie runs to her phone and squeaks happily. Lily shoves Misha aside and grabs her phone off the desk. Misha doesn’t mind, going straight to his tablet. Michael picks up his video game, pumping his fist in the air, and Carrie eagerly types away on her phone again.]
Misha [to himself]: Storm’s passed.
[Simultaneously, they all file out of the room, staring at their respective handheld, without speaking to or looking at each other.]
