A Rainy Night
A rainy night. A policeman’s torch illuminated the rusty gate. The skeletal mansion beyond and the surrounding, shadowy trees came into view as the torch was swished around. Lightning flashed and showed the finer details of the house. Dragons, not gargoyles, preyed on top of the turrets and the overgrown doors and white-washed windows gave the house an air of being abandoned, but the police were there to prove otherwise. The padlock looked impossible but the rusty chain had broken at a single tug. Policemen braced themselves, but it wasn’t enough to avoid the sight of Miss Sophia’s body…
