Be silly. Be honest. Be kind.

As Megan looked out from the plane, she realized her life would be changed forever. It had only been a week since the passing of her mother, who was practically her best friend. Now she was on a plane to Whidby Island Washington to start a new life with her father and little sister, Katie who lived with him. The thought of living in Washington made her nauseous, but nothing was worse to Megan than realizing that she was stuck living with the man she hated the most. He was always so annoying and treated Megan like a child.
After only an hour flight that felt like forever Megan got off the plane and looked for her dad in the sea of people, but he was nowhere. Megan decided to catch a bus. When she got to her dad’s, she slowly walked through the door, she heard them laughing and a movie blaring, as she walked into where they were her sister, Katie instantly saw her, she ran up to Megan and gave her a big hug, Megan thought it was weird. Her dad said nothing to her, not a word. Not a single “I missed you”, or “how have you been?” He just sat there with a peculiar look on his face. Although Megan hated him she wondered why he wouldn't even acknowledge her, after all she was his daughter too. Her sister showed her to her room, it was small and had all the things from Megan's childhood, her blanket that she couldn't sleep without and the night light still plugged into the wall. Her father finally came into the room at around 12 that night and said “goodnight, I love and miss you”. Megan was awake but didn't have it in her to turn over and talk to him.
The next morning Megan was awoken from a nightmare, it was not like the ones she had as a child about monsters, it was different. This nightmare was about her mom. The fatal car accident. Megan saw it all, how the car was impaled from both sides, her mom hunched over the steering wheel. Megan began to wonder how herself even made it out there alive. Today was Saturday as Megan tried to erase the nightmare she overheard her dad and sister talking about going to the zoo. Katie came sprinting into Megan's room and told her to hurry up and get ready that they were leaving soon, the zoo was fun, but still Megan's father said nothing, he just stood there with the same blank stare he always had while Katie and Megan looked at all the animals. As they were on their way, home they were stuck in traffic, they saw ambulances and fire trucks speed around them. Megan finally saw what had happened, it was a car accident. A car accident like the one Megan and her mom were in, the car looked like theirs did, crushed on all sides. “There was no way anybody in that car was going to make it” is what Megan thought to herself as they slowly drove by, the firefighters were busy putting people from the car accident in body bags. Megan thought to herself how terrible that must be for their families. As Megan thought to herself, Katie looked at her and said, “Is that what happened to you and mom?” Megan looked at Katie and tried to wrap her brain around what she meant but then everything hit Megan, she remembered being hit, laying there in pain, bleeding, looking over at her mom, knowing that they would not make it. She realized that was why her father never talked to her. Megan was in shock, so much shock that she could only let out 2 words, “I’m dead”.
