Breakdown the Look
YouTube, home of where beauty bloggers around the world upload their videos of tutorials on looks every girl wants to learn how to do. Having a night out with the girls downtown, you can go for a black smoky eye and a nude lip. Is it your first time meeting your boyfriend’s parents? You can go for a soft and settle neutral eye look and end it with a clear gloss. Ever just want to feel beautiful, go full glam with glitter eyelids and top that with a cute ombre lip combo. There are so many different looks you can find on YouTube to create, or just perfect your craft. From famous beauty bloggers like Carly Bybel and Jacklyn Hill, to the not so famous ones that are making a name for themselves; like Jackie Aine and Sondra Deluxe. Us makeup lovers have hit the subscribe button to see the next look. I personally prefer a full face glam look, and for what I like my favorite beauty blogger is Dymond Goods, but known on YouTube as DGoods. On Dymond’s channel she did a “Get Ready with Me” video that included a hair review and a full-face makeup tutorial, as she talked about what is going on in her life. As I took notes while watching her video like any other person I had my likes and dislikes. With that I am going to breakdown the important and favorite parts about her tutorial and give my opinion about it. Dymond started out her full glam look makeup look with brows then proceeded to move on with eyeshadow. “Im going to take this luxury eye cream from Kiss New York Professional and it’s in the color white, and im going to use this to prime my eyelids” (Dymond Goods). When doing eyeshadow, you always want to make sure you prime your eyelids with an eyeshadow primer, concealer, or a white eye cream stick. Priming your eyelids allows the eyeshadow to stick to your eyelid and gives it an even base to blend the colors seamlessly. Her eyeshadow look was a smoked-out burgundy which I liked the idea. I did not like how she did the burgundy smoked look because her transition shade was too dark. A transition shade is a light shade which will help all the other eye colors blend together. Now because she applied a transition shade that was too dark her eyeshadow came out patchy and it was not blended at all. After Dymond completed her eyeshadow she moved on to the most important part, that could make or break your makeup; priming. Having a good base will allow your face makeup to look much more skin like, hydrated, and gives it a nice even base for application. It is no secret that makeup is bad for your skin so it is very important to prep your skin. From 15:02 to 15:06 she talks about the moisturizer she uses. “So, I didn’t actually moisturize my face so im going to use my cetaphil”. Cetaphil is an affordable skin care line that caters to dry skin. Their products are really moisturizing and always have your face looking dewy. In the video you can visually see how after she used the cetaphil, it gave her a hydrating glow without her face being oily. Continuing the process of priming she used a pray on primer to lock in her base. From 16:10 to 16:24 she states, “I just used my seinfield and this is a prime, set, and refresh hangover 3 in 1” (Dymond Goods). That spray on primer she used is from the brand too faced, from their hangover primer line. Her spraying that after she moisturized gave her skin a tacky wet base which will allow her foundation and concealers to stick to her face. This was a good step because her foundation will go more evenly and priming helps your makeup last longer. One thing that I personally would change about this step was to add another primer on top of the spray that had a more lotion based consistency. Having a primer that is silicon based is nice because when you massage into your skin it evenly gets into all your pores and fills them. Also after her primer she should have set her face with loose powder so her primer can sink into her face. Lastly after you apply a, moisturizer and a primer give your skin like 5 to 10 minutes so your skin really sucks in the product. After priming she moved onto her face makeup which includes foundation, concealer, and powder. The face part of makeup always moves fast because everyone basically has their own little routine because the face makeup process never changes. Even with a variety of different products your face makeup will be the same. While she was doing her face, makeup noticed her foundation was too light for her complexion. When finding the right foundation shade, you want to find something that matches your chest rather than just your face. In cases like hers her face is lighter than her body so it her face makeup looked like she had a mask on. Also having a lighter foundation throws off your concealer because when you highlight your face, you want to highlight with a shade that is 2 to 3 shades lighter than your complexion. So, with the light foundation color and concealer it makes your face look washed out. Even though she does her face makeup u every video she should explain the process in every video. Like I said earlier with different products face makeup steps will not change, but she could offer up better techniques while explaining her foundation routine. Dymonds full glam makeup look was a very good “out for the night” look with the girls or even a concert look. My favorite parts of a tutorial are always the beginning because that is where everything matters the most. For example, eyeshadow can always be different so I always pay attention to the eyeshadow looks. Also prepping the skin s my all-time favorite part, because I wear a lot of makeup so you want to make sure you are protecting your face and starting it off with a nice hydrating base. Blending is very important when it comes to make your face should be blended seamlessly. Just as your regular face has shadows and dimension, it is never distinct and that is exactly how your makeup should be. In other words, it should be “your skin, but better”. If I could change two things about her tutorial it would have to be the time limit. A makeup tutorial should about 15 to 20 minutes long. 30 minutes for a tutorial is too long, you should give a tutorial while explaining your product and your application technique in an understandable, Orderly fashion. It is 2017 no one wants to sit through and watch a 30-minute tutorial. Also, when talking about a product she used she never gave an estimated price range is which is also very important. Makeup is very expensive so I like when beauty bloggers do videos like “Affordable makeup look” or videos like “Full glam look using all high-end products”. Me personally I like to by a lot of high end products because 1, I love makeup, and 2 I believe in quality over quantity. So, for people who are watching the videos it is nice to add in a price range so if I could decide if it really is worth the coins or not. Although this tutorial was not one my favorites it did reassure me of what I look for and want in a makeup tutorial.
