"Black Is Beauty" by Shenell, discusses the reasoning with the color black as unpopular or less favorable. She describes a time in her life when someone had given her a compliment only to relate it back to the color of her skin. She uses painfully true statements or experiences that all minorities or persons of color can relate to. Shenell uses strong ideas and powerful statements to support her experiences.

"I feel like I must fight 10 times as harder to achieve my goals," she writes. Although we are progressing as a society, there are still injustices and stereotypes of the black race as a whole.  What I enjoyed most about her piece is the address to 2019 to be able to "live in a society where people see more than just the color of your skin." Shenell understands what it's like living as a woman of color in her predominantly white society. Now, she writes  so we can understand her situation and contribute to the idea that black is truly beauty.
