What Role Will Robots Play in Our Future? Is this the route humans should be pushing to the forefront?

“AI will overtake humans to the point that biological intelligence will be 1% and none of us will have a job”. Said by Elon Musk, the billionaire behind Space X, Tesla, and Neurolink voices his apprehensions on robots and the possibility of them leaving us jobless in the future. Musk's prediction highlights the rapid growth of AI and its implications for humanity. While AI offers much to companies looking to save money, it also raises concerns for white-collared workers fearing job displacement. To fully analyze what role robots will play in our future, we must first understand what exactly they are and what they can do.

Robots emerge as automatically operated machines that replace human effort, composed to redefine the very fabric of our future existence. Artificial intelligence imitates human intelligence and problem-solving from white-collar jobs to the medical world. While this may sound great to employers, statistics show that AI could potentially replace around 800 million jobs worldwide by 2030 meaning its economic impact reaches a colossal $15.7 trillion (about $48,000 per person in the US). This statistic links with the following information and presents the question of how AI could appeal to companies if it causes so much money loss.

Companies are looking to save costs therefore the option of using computers and robots instead of humans is appealing. Robots have advantages that humans simply cannot offer. Robots don’t require rest, which is a human necessity that cannot be given up. Alongside not needing rest, robots also don't need wages, or benefits, and are generally more efficient and less error-prone. By automating repetitive tasks, companies can now pay less for more to be done in the workplace in a safer way.

After doing research it has been brought to light that nearly 50 jobs that were once human-dominated are rapidly welcoming robots into their workplace. Some of these jobs include surgeons, anesthesiologists, and doctors. The number of robots supporting and assisting highly skilled medical professionals is growing. Some robots can even execute minor surgeries independently which sounds exciting and almost futuristic to some people in the medical world, however, humans in jobs like journalism and writing fear for their careers as AI writing tools begin to become more and more popular. If you browse the internet, you likely have read an article generated by AI. An honorable mention of a computer-assistant writer is ChatGPT which you can use for a range of tasks such as generating ideas, resolving problems with code, and assisting with grammar. The generative pre-trained AI is taking over the writing world causing not only journalists and reporters to be pushed out of jobs, but students to also be wrongfully flagged for using AI assistant writing tools.

Elon Musk's warning underscores the impact of AI and robotics on our future. From surgery to writing, human roles are being redefined, and navigating this issue requires proactive measures to ensure humans can use artificial intelligence to their advantage whilst being able to make a livable wage and stay passionate about their jobs. In these very AI-demanding times, we need to closely monitor and evaluate the growth of AI and how it may impact people of the lower class and even middle class, I believe with extensive work and robot training the future holds a promising start of co-existence over the globe.

I am a upcoming Computer Network major who is very interested in AI and how it will impact jobs who will work with technology. How will these devices help us and can they co-exist with us?
