“Summer Reading: A National Tragedy” by Elena Nicolaou in the September, 2011 issue of Teen Ink identifies and solves the problems of students not reading or learning over summer break. The loss of memory can be prevented by both reading over the break as well as teachers giving their students summer work to complete.
I, personally, both agree and disagree with this article. For starters, no sane student would enjoy schoolwork over summer break after finishing several months of arduous school assignments. On the other hand, however I can see Nicolaou’s point in preventing memory loss. I’m actually somewhat surprised, yet glad, that Ayersville Local Schools doesn’t participate in summer assignments. One negative side is that many students would not complete the assignments and start a new school year with zeros on the grade card. This controversial topic has both positives and negatives that are somehow able to co-exist
