My First Supper
"My First Supper" by Brandon Hilker was very intriguing. The opening paragraph caught my attention quickly. Right away, I knew this would be an interesting piece, and I was right. I loved how Brandon set the scene in the beginning of the article- everyone was occupied except for him. He felt out of place and nervous. This helped build the suspension.
As dinner begins, Brandon is still very nervous. Finally, he realizes that just because his girlfriend's dad is a pastor does not make him or his family any different from anyone else. After he makes this realization, Brandon becomes much more relaxed. He gets along with the pastor and actually enjoys himself. He refers to this dinner as his "first supper". I loved that he ended the piece this way- it definitely summed the whole thing up and was the perfect was to finish.
