"When I Hated My Body," a poem written by Victoria Lopatka, is very well writen, and conveys the feelings and emotions of a girl who was very insecure about her appearence. She saw other girls in music videos, or on TV, who have "the perfect body" and she began to feel bad about how she looked. "They taught me to hate myself." By the end of the poem, the narrator realizes that being a human in your own individual, non-materialistic way, is beautiful, and is really what makes someone "perfect." This poem gives off a wonderfully positive message. Though cliché, the poem makes this theme something unique in my opinion.
Personally, I found this piece relatable in a sense, even though boys are stereotypically not supposed to be insecure about their bodies. The message of the poem comforted me, and I think that the author really captured a poignant insecuirty faced by many people, and made it slightly less harsh. The lines "They are human in an honest and all-baring way and it is what makes you beautiful," and "It is what makes me beautiful, and it is what makes you beautiful," are especially moving, and leave a lasting, positive impact. Overall, this poem was beatiful and honest, just like the message about bodies it is displaying.
