This poem is about a 14-year-old African American boy accused of murdering two white girls and throwing them in a ditch.  He was the youngest person killed under a death penalty during the 20th century in the United States.  He was taken from his family and interrogated for hours.  The police officers that took him wrote in their notes that he had confessed to killing the two girls but it was never recorded that he did.  When he went to court it only took the jury about 10 minutes to decide that he needed to be killed for what he had done.  They took him to a room with a chair, but he was too short for the chair so they put a Bible underneath him.  A Bible! Out of all of the books you could use in the world you decided to use the one book that is supposed to forgive our sins but instead it was used to kill this boy.  His body went into shock, it was twitching like crazy.  The men just watched him die in that chair.  They turned the electricity up 3 more times and after four minutes he was gone.
