Dear Mr. President,

Our country is falling apart. Big government is simply handing money to people who don’t deserve it, and wasting government funding on unnecessary programs. I believe that in order for our country to succeed we need to influence people to work hard and support themselves. The role of government should be to help protect the country and keep the people’s best interest in mind.

I have always believed in the statement “Give a hand up, not a hand out.” This means that we should help unemployed people get jobs in order to move our economy forward. We cannot just support the lifestyles of people who abuse the system. “The Democracy will cease to exist when you take away from those who are willing to work and give to those who would not.” –Thomas Jefferson. Also every time the government intervenes to try to make things better for our country, they end up wasting money due to inefficiencies. The American Dream is the idea that anyone who lives in this country can be successful through hard work. I believe this to be true and think that as a country we could move forward to achieve this if the government stopped giving handouts to people who want to coast by in life. Why not try to figure out a way to help people get training and education so they can bring themselves up and out of poverty? I think that we as a country should eliminate the entire welfare program for people able to work. Doing so would also revitalize the US economy because people who used to rely on welfare checks could potentially have a job and be earning far more than before, and therefore spending far more than before. Currently 29.9 million Americans rely on some form of government assistance, which is over 8% of the population!

When government becomes too large, it can actually be limiting to the people and can eventually lead to socialism. “Socialism is a philosophy of failure, the creed of ignorance, and the gospel of envy, its inherent virtue is the equal sharing of misery. “-Winston Churchill. For example the Cuban government, which has many government run services, hinders the creativity of its people by eliminating the incentive to come up with new ideas . While on the other hand, capitalism fosters entrepreneurship and the growth of a nation.

In a country as great as America, there is no way this should be happening. It is tearing apart the very foundations of or country back to the American dream. I ask that you, as the leader of this great nation do what you can to make it right. I know that you want what is best for this country, but please consider reforming programs so that they do not perpetuate the cycle of poverty. Thank you for your time.

Sincerely,

Austin
