The Gigantic Problem Of Overfishing
The Gigantic Problem Of Overfishing
Would you like to have your entire race almost driven into extinction? I expect not.People should care about the gigantic problem of overfishing, this topic is important because we only get one planet. Let's treat this world with the utmost respect instead of ruining it. I have always tried to live by leave it how you found it. I believe that overfishing is a huge problem that we are driving another species into extinction. Annihilating a whole ecosystem so it never exists again is a terrible thing to do. Also by over fishing the small fish, we are taking away a food source for larger fish these predators will die. The predator population in the ocean has dropped by 90% (Thurstan 2-3).
Why are we killing all these fish when we don't even eat all the fish that we are catching? Think about your life, do you eat fish on a regular basis or even weekly? In today's society we eat all this processed stuff that is terrible for you, but we are not eating all the fish we are catching. In fact we are only eating 80% of the fish we catch and we waste 2 billion pounds of fish each year(Thurstan and Callum pg 1).
The evolution of fishing over the years has changed with technology to aid the fishing industry in finding better and faster ways of depleting earth’s abundance of fish. For example, seine nets can pull in 200,000 fish at one time, the older nets caught much less fish, the damage of this huge invention propelled the booming business. The nets these days have gotten way too big. So the fisheries made motorized winches that help them pull up the oversized nets from the ocean, and fish locaters are one hundred percent cheating all they do is tell you exactly where the fish are. Also I find it very unfair to the fish. When you go hunting for example, you don't have a satellite image or a deer locater to tell you where the deer are. Therefore I think that you should go without fish locaters as well (Thurstan and Callum pg 1). Line fisheries also contribute to overfishing for example, they caught 350 fish to 400 hooks. A perfect example of an area that got really fished out was Loch Fyne, Scotland in the Clyde. This place was abundant with herring in the mid 1800’s by 1880 there was little to no herring left at this spot. This occurred with limited technology compared to what we are fishing with today (Thurstan and Callum pg 2-3).
In conclusion, we can fix over fishing by not taking excess fish out of the ocean or anywhere for that matter. Please be mindful of your environment, realize that it is the only ocean we have so let's treat it right. People need to recognize what we are doing to the fish population is destroying our oceans, and stop over fishing in it’s tracks.
