“I wanted to be the fastest typer in my class,” says Dwane Wang of Hartland, Wisconsin. Typing has been a part of Dwane’s life since primary school. When typing became required in his third grade curriculum, Dwane wanted to be the best. Today, typing at around 150 words per minute, Wang shares some tips he learned along his typing journey.

For starters, learn to type slow, maintaining 100% accuracy. “It will build your muscle memory and make the rest of the process easier.” Wang says, “Always start with your fingers on 'Home Row’” Wang says “This position is easy to find since your keyboard always has a little notch that sticks out on the “F” and “J” keys.”

After you learn where all the keys are, Wang reveals his number one tip: type without looking. He says, “By knowing where the keys are on command… It speeds up your typing much faster.” Does a piano player look at the keys before he touches each one? No, he must read the music on the paper, and let his muscle memory take over. This is the same concept Wang uses for his typing.

Wang uses typing websites to practice his typing skills. Practicing is necessary for maintaining your speed. These websites train you to use all of your fingers for each of its letters. Explore for yourself to see which site you like the most, and stick to it. By practicing consistently, you will always build your typing skills and speed.
