Do the Benefits of Exploration Outweigh the Costs?
As people, we have faced the fear of the unknown involved in exploration. Despite the consequences, we persevere through obstacles and whatever juggernauts we encounter. Some may reason that continuing to expand and explore today is a waste of valuable and finite resources that could instead be utilized for improving the conditions at home. But throughout history, humankind has expressed curiosity towards the unknown, and what we discover are unexpected benefits that greatly outweigh the costs. Without our pursuit of the unknown, the New World would have never been discovered, the sea wouldn't have been brought to light, and life as we know it today wouldn't have happened without technological and scientific advances towards the unknown.
In the early times of human establishment, there was a common misconception about the unknown globe. I was thought to be a cube, rather than sphere we know it is today, and so people feared they would simply 'fall off of the world.' There were a plethora of reasons why expansion and exploration was necessary - one including the desire to have a faster trade route to Asia- and therefore the New World was discovered by the explorers who faced the unknown. The discovery resulted in a new abundance of resources and rich culture, all of which was not expected to be found. With the finding, it gave Europeans the chance to change (and perhaps improve) their lives by moving from crowded Europe to the New World. America, as explained in Turner's Frontier Thesis, stemmed and inspired the continuance of exploration- people were driven by the promise of new discoveries and opportunities in the unknown. An additional important concept that should be duly noted among other pieces of work was the Manifest Destiny, which claimed that it is the American people's duty to expand. Without the driving forces of understanding and exploring the unknown, we could have ever experienced the New World.
Another type of unknown place is the ocean. It is a subject that we as humans know very little about even to this day. A vast majority of our globe in water, yet many of its contents and mysterious elude us. Exploration of the sea has provided us with valuable information of subjects such as organisms, our origins, and science: all of which have helped enhance our ways of life. Examining organisms from the ocean give us an understanding of our past and our evolution, and we can study the complex or basic functions necessary for life at the bottom of the ocean. It has forced us to struggle towards the unknown world underwater, and we have used submarines and other devices in attempts to view what lives in the ocean. These advancements of technology and sciences have allowed us to continue exploration of the unknown.
Lastly, because of the unknown, we have strived to comprehend and advance our technology and sciences to directly or indirectly impact human's lives. Through research and discoveries we have found cures to disease or preventative measures against sickness. Studying and testing the unknown helps to understand problems and the eradication of things such as diseases by creating solutions. We also study other organisms to learn about their intelligence and interaction with the world, which can then be applied and adapted for improving conditions. It is necessary to delve into the unknown so we can progress and positively change.
Exploration of the unknown is essential. Despite the costs, the benefits reaped greatly outweigh the expenses. Point in case, exploration of the unknown is absolutely a worthy and necessary goal.
