“Happiness is a perfume you cannot pour on others without getting some on yourself.”-Ralph Waldo Emerson

The beautiful American word
It always gets me
Half-sour, sour
Garlic, dill
Kosher, zesty
Then we tamper with perfection
Bread and butter
Sweet pickles?

Really?
Pickles on sandwiches? On burgers?

Really?
No.
Savor them alone
McDonald's missed the memo
Pickles in all their pickled goodness
Polluted
With mediocrity

Ketchup

Mustard

Mayonnaise

And special sauce?

Really?

And what foolish foodie ever thought to fry a pickle?
Why, why, why
Why fry a pickle

A dual personality in itself
Outside unlike the inside

Crunchy, warty, firm

Giving way to one-day-too-long-soaked-in-brine mush

Even worse, the mush-brained
“Dude,
We're in a pickle”
Don't say it

Just don't
Are we swimming in a vinegar vat
Sealed with a rubber top?
Struck with a knife?
Twisted open to the sweet stench of acid and dill?
Didn't think so
Better to be in a jam than a pickle
Better to slosh in something sweet and sticky

This is a poem inspired by The Beautiful American Word Guy by John Weir. It's playful and silly.
