"If winning doesn't matter, why do they keep score?" - Vince Lambargi

Standing in that ring was one of the most intimidating things I have ever been through, I was sure I was going to mess up. In seventh grade I participated in the all-district track meet. I threw the discus and in the track meet to qualify for district, I got second place and I was keenly wanting first in the district.
That day was cold, windy, and cloudy. The wind was blowing all through my hair, turning my cheeks rose red. The only way I could keep my hands warm was by the small circle I made with my hands and blowing hot air into it. It was hard to throw in because I was facing against the bone chilling wind. After everyone had warmed up, they started calling individuals up to go for the real event. Once my name was called, I had a million thoughts going through my mind of what I needed to do to get first place. My first throw was eighty-two feet, two inches. I wasn’t satisfied with that number because I didn’t think it would win first in the district. The girl that had beaten me at the previous track meet threw after me and she only got eighty one feet, ten inches. Nobody that day was throwing that far besides me and the girl that had beat me before, so it was basically only me and her competing against each other. My name was then called for my second throw and once again I had a million and one thoughts in my mind. I spun, I released. I went so fast that I couldn’t even see how far or where I threw the discus. Everyone started mumbling under their breaths “wow.” I didn’t know why, but out of the corner of my eye I saw my coach running toward me with her hands in the air as the recorder chanted “ninety four feet, ten inches”. I was in awe. I couldn’t believe that I had not only beaten my school record by thirty feet, but beat the district record for seventh grade girls’ discus in Lewisville ISD since 2005. I then came back into reality and knew that the girl who had beaten me still had two more throws left. On her second throw she threw eighty three feet-six inches. I as well as her still had one more throw which decided everything. On my third throw I had messed up badly and only threw sixty three feet, but I didn’t care, I was confident that I could win with the results of my second throw. She had one more throw. I was watching, biting my fingernails frantically.
Her last throw was good, but not good enough. It was only eighty five feet-five inches. It was over; I had won the whole thing. Hearing my name called on the microphone stating that I was the best discus thrower in seventh grade for Lewisville ISD was one of the best, heartwarming feelings I have ever had. I was the only person at the whole track meet that had beaten a district record. I will not, I cannot forget that day. I will always love seeing my name on the record board in my school and in the Lewisville ISD hall of fame for seventh grade girls discus throwing.
