The Fear of Heights
Imagine this, people screaming as the roller coaster goes down the hill, children running wild, do you know a place like this? July 15th, 2006 my family and I are at Holiday World. We were walking around and Mom, Dad, and Paige wanted to go down this water slide. Due to my fear of heights they did not get to go down the slide. Much like Helen Keller overcame the obstacle of not being able to communicate, I to overcame my obstacle of having a fear of heights.
Helen Keller was able to overcome the obstacle of not being able to communicate. At the age of two Helen Keller got a severe illness that made her go blind and deaf. Helen’s parents were close to sending Helen to an asylum, but there last option before that was Annie. Annie was hired by the Keller’s to teach Helen how to communicate. First Annie had to get Helen to trust her, and then she taught her obedience and language.
Just like Helen Keller, I overcame my fear of heights with my parents help. Ever since I was a little kid I always had the fear of heights. I was always afraid that I would fall and plunge to my death. Then one day my parents decided to help me with my fear of heights. They told me that I should hold onto a railing and just look straight ahead. Now I am able to conquer any height.
Now you may think that Helen Keller’s obstacle is completely different from mine, but there are many similarities. If it was not for our teachers or parents we would never have overcame are obstacles. Both of our obstacles prevented our families from doing activities. Helen’s family really could not go out somewhere because they had to watch Helen. In my family my fear of heights would prevent us from doing fun activities such as go down a big slide or ride the water log at Holiday World.
Just like Helen Keller was able to overcome the obstacle of not being able to communicate, I to overcame my fear of heights. I learned from Helen’s obstacle that learning anything blind and deaf is much harder than it is to see and hear, and that I should be grateful for being able to see and hear. I learned from my obstacle that no height is too high to concur. As Helen Keller once said ¨ Alone we can do so little; together we can do so much¨.
