As Thomas A. Edison said “Our greatest weakness lies in giving up. The most certain way to succeed is always to try just one more time”.  I had to beat the obstacle of my fear of heights. On June 12th, it was summertime and I was in first grade and I had to live up to my fear of heights. Much like Helen Keller had to overcome the obstacle of not being able to communicate, I too overcame my obstacle/fear of heights.
Helen Keller wanted to learn and communicate to people but could not, yet she overcame that with some discipline and teaching. Helen was only two when she went blind because of an illness. Her family couldn’t think of much to do, so they finally decided to get a teacher to teach Helen, her name was Annie. She had to teach Helen to trust and obey her first, which took time and patience. After all that work, Annie finally taught Helen language and how to understand, much like I finally overcame my obstacle my fear of heights.
I overcame my obstacle of my fear of heights by going to a place with an abundance of heights, Holiday World. At that age I was terrified of heights and I do not know why. So when my parents said, “We’re going to Holiday World,” I was happy, but scared of all the heights they had. Once I got there I finally rode a roller coaster and began to get over that obstacle. I had to force myself to not be afraid because a lot of people were watching, but after I rode it I got back in the line to ride the roller coaster again.
Our obstacles are kind of similar with Helen having to overcome not being able to communicate and me not being able to get over my fear of heights. We both had to overcome the fear of what lies ahead of us. Yet we both faced our fear/problem even if it was scary, we both struggled in different ways too. Helen struggled with not being able to communicate and I struggled with fear of heights it was a struggle to convince me to ride the roller coaster. The obstacles we faced made us stronger as a person and showed us that we are capable of doing things that might seem impossible at first.
So we both had struggles and obstacles that we eventually faced. From Helen’s obstacle, I learned that anything is possible with a little discipline and hard work. With the experience of my obstacle I learned to face my fears even if they are scary because you will have to face them eventually. So as Helen Keller once quoted, “Character cannot be developed in ease and quiet. Only through experience of trial and suffering can the soul be strengthened, ambition inspired, and success achieved”.
