The Greatest Ever
With ear piercing screams around me, everyone stood clapping… Even though I was far away from where the field was, I felt like I was standing right next to Calvin Johnson, congratulating him. It was just like I could see and smell the sweat that was built up on his forehead. It’s any kids dream to witness something historical like this… and I did.
A few minutes earlier, I was sitting with my family, paying close attention to the game, watching the great Calvin Johnson run each play. I felt like I was studying film for what the defenders weaknesses were and what they mess up on. It was like I was a pro myself. I began to wonder, “Is he going to beat Jerry Rice’s receiving record, or would I have to wait for next week to come?”
Suddenly a mixture of smells punched me right in the nose. It was the smell of beer and bratwursts. The smells of the food and drinks brought me back to reality.
Out of nowhere, my dad handed me a Mountain Dew and some nachos. “You owe me ten dollars,” he joked.
“It costs that much for some nachos and a Mountain Dew?” I questioned. He nodded his head in pain. He hates to spend so much money on things you can get for seven dollars cheaper.
With under four minutes left, Calvin Johnson was sent into motion. Just as he got set up again, Lions quarterback, Matthew Stafford barked “HUT!” Calvin took off on a drag route. A drag or in route is when you sprint up the field a couple of yards, then cut into the middle of the field. Just as Calvin broke to the middle of the field Matthew rifled a pass right into Calvin's hands. He took off like a bullet out of the gun. It seemed like he was faster than Usain Bolt; the fastest man alive. Twenty yards into the run it seemed like he was going to score, but then a speedy Falcons defensive back came out of nowhere to force Calvin out of bounds.
As I looked around I could see some die-hard Lions fans going crazy over the historical play. People were holding up posters, others were screaming and clapping, even one guy dressed up with a lion hat, a Calvin Johnson home game jersey, blue and white face paint, was screaming at the top of his lungs and dancing like nobody was around.
Since the play was over with, he went over to his dad and handed him the ball. All smiles from the both of the Johnson’s. His dad with red eyes, tears streaming down his face like a waterfall. Through all of that, he was still smiling. In my head I began to think, “I guess that this is what a father looks like, when their son accomplishes something legendary.”
I felt like I had witnessed one of the most historical events in NFL history. Watching Calvin Johnson break this record was crazy to think about. People said that Jerry Rice’s record couldn’t be broken but I knew that there was at least one person that could do it… Calvin Johnson.
Over the years, I have collected mountains of Lions merchandise. Some of the collectables include a Joique Bell picture - showing him trucking a helpless defender. This picture also has his autograph in the middle of it and is hung in my bedroom next to my other sports merchandise. Another piece of Lions product that is mine is a Lions pennant, that says Lions, and has the Lions logo next to the name. My all time favorite piece, though, has to be a portion of Calvin Johnson’s NFL jersey. With a black sharpie he signed it. I imagine him signing it, the sharpie flying across the fabric. Like he has done it millions of times before. To me, it is the most valuable thing ever. From going to this game with my family, and collecting Lions gear, it has taught me I am a Lions fan for life. No matter if they are good or bad, I will always be a Lions fan.
