An Unforgettable Adventure
“Run!” yelled Josh. Suddenly we were running for our lives - we were sprinting as fast as cheetahs through the neighborhood. The three of us thought that we escaped from the house when. . . the sight of headlights immediately told us we were wrong.
A couple of hours earlier, we were walking down the sidewalk to hit the next house. We had already ding-dong ditched 3 other houses. This house was different though. It was a huge brick house that had what seemed like 50 windows that were all pitch black. There wasn’t a noise outside and I could smell the fresh dirt and soil in my face. Me and Brock were lying behind a bush across the street from the house waiting for Josh to ring the doorbell. We heard the slight sound - ding dong - from across the street. Josh sprinted back to a bush in the house's front yard. Suddenly all the lights in the house flashed on like a bolt of lightning and man came out with what looked like his daughter next to him. They were looking around for flashlights in hand.
Right when we thought they weren’t going to find us, the man’s daughter yelled out “Dad get the gun! I found them behind the bush.”
I thought to myself “I wish they wouldn’t have found us,” as I was out of breath after running away from the last house we hit.
Josh yelled “RUN!” at the top of his lungs for me and Brock to hear. As quickly as we could we got up and darted like we were in the olympics down the sidewalk. We thought we had escaped from the house when we saw a black car that almost blended in with the night sky. They turned on their brightest lights and started out of the driveway and after us. We began running again as if our lives depended on it. It seemed like we ran around half the neighborhood even though we only ran past about 5 houses.
“What if I get caught,” I sighed to myself. We hid on the side of a house that seemed calm and safe.
We knew we had finally escaped them when their car went right past us. We sighed and figured the car was going to go back to it’s house. But then, we saw it turn down it’s lights and stop at the stop sign. Then out of nowhere the backed into a driveway and started driving towards us.
They rolled down their windows and yelled out “I’m going to get you!” Once again we had to sprint back around the neighborhood. About 8 houses passed and Josh just jumped into someone’s yard. He tumbled down a hill and into their backyard. Me and Brock followed as he ran to a pine tree. He dug right down under it like a squirrel burying its food. There was a line of pine trees so me and Brock both picked one right next to Josh and were as quiet as possible. There was a fresh smell of pine and soil; there were pine cones and needles and the ground. They were scratching my sides like crazy. But it was worth not getting caught. The car drove right past us in the darkness. It circled around the neighborhood a couple more times just to make sure we weren’t out in the open where they could easily catch us. There was a deep breath by each one of us when we saw them pull into their garage. “Wow that was close,” I celebrated to myself as I tried to catch my breath.
“We should get back to my house, Brock said. It’s really late.”
This was a very fun experience but it came with a lot of risks. We could have easily been caught if Josh hadn’t a smart hiding spot. But, from this experience, I learned that sometimes it’s good to take risks and get your adrenaline pumping because if you don’t then life will not be as adventurous and will not be as fun because you will never experience the rush like you would while taking risks.
