cain personal narrative
We passed the ball around to get ready for the lacrosse game. The team rushed over to the sideline like a fleet of soldiers as the captains went over to the referees. Me and my teammates hustled to our positions as the referee began to blow his whistle. The midfielders raced to the center of the field as it began to rain again. As they scurried to find the ball me and the other attackmen waited patiently in the wet, muddy, humid, Ohio weather. I could hear parents cheering,”go heat!!”
As our team gained possession the midfielders ran to our side of the field and passed me the ball as I cut across the crease getting ready to shoot. I bit down on my rubber tasting mouth guard and began to shoot as a huge defender began to charge at me. As his stick crashed into my collarbone I heard a snap and parents cheering because I had scored. As my teammates rushed to my side I began to get up and rip of the sweaty pads I had on. My teammates walked me over to the sideline as the trainer began to inspect my shoulder.
The trainer said,” I don’t think it’s broken but It might be.”
“Fantastic” I muttered.
My dad walked over and said,”we will have to go to the E.R. after the game. After all I am the only coach here.”
As I sat in the rain waiting patiently like a dog waiting for its owner the game was coming to an end. The game on the field behind ours had finished and the coach decided to stay and watch our game. He began to ask me some questions about what happened and I would answer.
He then asked,” Aren’t you cold?”
“Yeah I wish I had brought my jacket to the game.” I answered
“There take my jacket just give it back before you leave.” he said
“Thanks I really appreciate it.” I responded
Sitting in this rain is like torture, I thought to myself. How did that guy even get so close to me so quickly I wondered. This was the first game of the season and I had already gotten injured. At least I wouldn’t have to go to practices all the time because of my injury. The only thing I didn’t look forward to was how much medicine I was going to have to take to stop the pain.
After sitting in the rain for another 5 minutes my dad took me too the closest E.R. after we gave the guy his jacket back turns out the trainer was wrong and my collarbone was indeed broken. I was also shivering the whole time I was in the E.R., and I was having a low blood sugar. the car ride may have been the worst part though because of all the bumps in the road. On the bright side the guy who broke my collar bone apologized to my dad. The only thing I thought that should have happened was the referee throwing a penalty flag but that didn’t even happen.
At the E.R. I could barely walk so the nurses gave me a wheelchair to sit in and once they noticed I was shivering they brought me out a bunch of blankets and swaddled me like a baby. the doctor was dealing with other sports injuries so it took a little while but he still came to us. The hospital didn’t give us the highest quality sling so we went and got another one to replace it. Once we left the store the hotel was packed with other lacrosse teams and players. We were heading to our hotel room and i almost got hit by some kid on a different team who was racing his teammates down the hall.
The rest of the day went fine and a few of my friends who were on the team came to visit our room and some of them brought snacks which I enjoyed. Also my other coach (who was very late to the game) came to our room for a while. The night was pretty bad though because I couldn't move at all or else I would have been in a lot of pain. Another thing was that I couldn’t leave the room or else I could have further hurt myself.
