An Experience Like Any Other
The day came; it was now time to show everybody what we’ve worked for. Since September, we started rehearsing competition dances non-stop. Finally it was the day we got to compete them here at Monterrey, Mexico. Failures after disappointments after happiness after cheerfulness, nothing was expected to happen than to just dance. We’ve had bad rehearsals, bad days but today we needed to be focused and ready to dance.
“5, 6, 7, 8” the teacher was counting; we reviewed our danced several times before going on stage. Now that we were all on costume and with makeup on we wanted to be even ready.
“It’s your time to shine,” she kept telling us. “I chose each and every one of you to be part of my choreography for a reason, I knew you can handle all this stuff.”
We all breathe deeply and exhaled, competition mode can be exciting but scary at the same time.
“Don’t forget,” she started. “Arms down, head up, straight legs, pull tummies in, smile and enjoyed it!” she continued. “Oh, remember the LIFT!” The lift. The lift kept us all in an anxious feeling, what happens if we fall? We have to do it correctly. What happens if someone messes up? We have to keep going. What happens if the song goes out of control? We have to keep going. What happens if the songs volume to low? We have to keep going. No matter what happens, you always have to keep going. You can always feel the butterflies flying around your stomach and you shaking of fear and all this thoughts revolving in your head, but we all know that bowing and leaving the stage as the crowd claps is the best feeling in history.
“Are you girls ready?” a lovely woman approached at us. “Follow me.” Now, we were back stage, 2 dances and our turn. We relaxed ourselves and everyone stretched their own way one last time: Splits, squarts, and toes, everything for jumps, turns and movements. Everyone did what we had to be ready. Suddenly it was our turn; we hugged each other and wished us good luck. We ran to our positions when the announcer says. “Up next, number 345.” He says our studio and we’re on our position. After that is the silence, the lights off until… music starts and lights are on.
