This I Believe
“The most important thing I want you to believe in yourself and life is that you got to be true to yourself. You got to be true to yourself! If not you no can go nowhere, so the second, you gotta be side by side with God and that way it’s gonna give you the right path to your future and that’s the foundation of your life.” This is what my dad told me when I interviewed him about what he wanted me to believe in my life. When you're honest it helps you make you feel better and makes you know that you are doing the right thing.
Nelson Mandela said, “The first thing is to be honest with yourself. You can never have an impact on society if you have not changed yourself… Great peacemakers are all people of integrity, of honesty, but humility.” When you’re being true to yourself, you are completely honest with what you feel. Lying to yourself makes yourself believe what isn’t true and it hurts you inside. An average American tells about eleven lies. But why do we lie? To feel better right? Wrong. The more we lie the more it eats up inside of us. We lie just so we could hide from the truth.
Just a few weeks ago I got into trouble for lying knowing that it wasn’t right. I learned that lying to myself just made me hide from reality and hide who I truly am. Like what John Reilly said, “If you’re really being honest with yourself when you’re acting, part of it is touching the real you.” Don’t lie just because you want to make yourself feel better from other people. You should just stay honest with yourself to show your real self.
