Biking: It Is a Sport
“Biking is not a sport.” “Running is not a sport.” “swimming is not a sport”. I hear this far too often from friends that just want to frustrate me; it makes my blood boil with frustration, like what are the qualifications for something to be a sport? It makes me feel like the almost 30-hour a week that I put towards my “sports” is pointless when the only people that think your sport is a sport are the people that bike too.
At random times people just come up to you and say “biking is not a sport just so you know” and because almost everyone has a bike, they think of it as transportation instead of a means of working out. They say biking is trivial -- just what they do until they turn 16 and drive a car. When I ask why it is not a sport, their sole explanation is that everyone owns a bike, and it's not hard, it's easy.
People should just be more accepting of what people like to do and the sports they choose to play. Before you go up to someone that plays an unusual sport, don't say anything about it because you don't know what they have sacrificed to get where they are and what accomplishments they have made in their sport.
