“Final call 400- meter hurdles” My heart seems to stop as anxiety rushes through every inch of my body. I tie my spikes, while my head is playing every bad scenario, falling, getting last, or worse, running slower than my PR. Each one of these possibilities frightens me. I step into my blocks, glancing at every other runner in my heat. They all seem to be unbothered about the fact we are all about to run one of the most physically enduring events in the sport of track and field. 400-meter hurdles, each second worse than the last, I try to focus on the hurdles in front of me but instead I'm distracted by the excruciating pain that flows through my body. I get in my set position as my head hangs in silence. The silence of the meet is loud and sharp as I wait for the sound of the gun. Just then, Bang the sound of the gun goes off as each runner thrusts out of their blocks. “breath breath breath” I tell myself as I attack each hurdle. In the blink of an eye the runners hit the final 100-meters. Our eyes begin to fade to black as our legs seem to become anchors. Getting over each hurdle is gruesome and challenging.
Finally, I sprint over the last hurdle and finish the race. I immediately fall to the ground as I try to catch my breath, I hear the loud footsteps of my coaches running towards me. The smile covers their face from cheek to cheek as they tell me my time. “I beat my PR!” I yelled in excitement, in that moment is when I realized, that even though it hurts, getting better each day is the reason I love track & field so much.

Growing up I had a hard time trying to find a sport that meant something to me. However, this ended my first week into practice. Track and field quickly became my favorite sport and has held that spot for the last 3 years.
