Emily Kolbow is not just an ordinary sophomore. She happens to be the Arrowhead Warhawks number one singles tennis player.

As a freshman, Kolbow had a record of 24 wins and 11 losses. She made it to the final 16 at state before losing to the state runner up Maddie Johnson of Onalaska.

“My freshman year was a good learning experience for me,” said Kolbow. “ I didn’t know what to expect, but by the end of the season I was comfortable with everything.”

This past season, Kolbow posted a record of 31 wins and 5 losses. She finished third at state after defeating Whitefish Bay junior Lily Hayes in the third place match.

“My season went well,” said Kolbow. “I had a lot of fun,and finishing third at state was one of the best moments in my life.”

Kolbow lost in the semifinals to Homestead junior Elizabeth Konon. Kolbow lost the first set 2-6, won the second set 6-4, and then lost the third set 3-6. Kolbow was the first girl to win a set from Konon since Konon’s freshman year.

“I knew going into the match that I would have to play my best to beat her,” said Kolbow. “I gave it my all but I came up just a little short.”

Although Kolbow came in third at state this past season, she has high expectations for herself for the rest of her high school career.

“I want to win state at least once,” said Kolbow. “Hopefully I can win state as a junior and a senior, but I’d be satisfied with one.”
