Before the Meet
Today is sectionals. We have been working for this meet all week. I can’t believe it’s almost time. I always have to remind myself, “Oh yah, I have a cross-country meet after school.” I know I shouldn’t be nervous, but it’s hard to hold back the butterflies when if you mess up, than there’s no going to state. Sometimes I think, “What if I get a horrible cramp?” or, “What if I trip and get a terrible time?” or, “What if……….” It isn’t easy, but I’ll manage. I have to. Every so often in the hallway, my friend Bill would say, “Are you ready Matt?” I would answer, “Yeah. Are you ready?” But then I ask myself, “Am I?” There’s the bell. Time to put on my uniform. Here comes Bill again. “You ready?” “Do I have a choice?” “No.” “Then I’m ready.”
