A Violent Assault on Democracy Itself

January 7, 2021

On January 6th, 2021, a violent mob breached the U.S. capitol, putting the lives of everyone inside, Representatives, Senators, news reporters, and others, at risk.
And I was truly upset.

2021 was supposed to be a fresh start. A chance to move on from the death and the divisiveness of 2020. Most of all, a new presidency. I am not surprised that President Trump has not decided to concede and transfer the power peacefully, but I am shocked at yesterday's events. People died. All because they believed a lie that their leader told them. He broadcasted it everyone, tweeted it, and I'm surprised he didn't put it on a billboard.

The election was rigged.
It was a fraud.
I won the election by a landslide.

I was also shocked by the lack of security. There were about ten, twenty police officers on the steps of the Capitol. They were overrun extremely quickly. While watching the Black Lives Matter protests over the summer, I expected the National Guard to be there before the protesters were. But no. It's the epitome of white male privilege. A majority of the BLM protesters were black, and there were a lot of women there too- and they were teargassed, beaten, pepper-sprayed and arrested. But there were barely any arrests at this riot. And NONE of them were peaceful. None.

It really says something about our country.

I am glad, however, that Biden's win was certified. I've been waiting for a new presidency for the past four years. I've been waking up every morning, watching the news hoping that nothing bad would get mentioned.

You can't marry the person you love.
You aren't protected by discrimination rules.
You can't get an abortion if you need one.

On January 21st, I will finally not wake up with fear. I'll know that I am safe and that our new president will do everything in his power to support LGBTQ+ and women's rights.

I know that I will be considered a human being.
